Does Polution spread infinite?
Let's say, the base has some steam engines and produces some pollution. Now the steam engines are getting replaced by solar panels and accumulators. There is a reg cloud on the map based on the polution so far.

If no new polution source is build, will the cloud shrink? Will the pollution level go down? O will the pollution - which has a higher red concentration in the middle of the base (steam engines) than in the outlines - just spread out until everything is evenly poluted?

I'm sure that the pollution fades a little bit everytime it spreads. Trees will absorb alot of it, but even they will eventually wither and die when exposed to pollution. And i've seen the pollution fade away even on desert.

the polution will fade if nothing is polluting, but the aliens it spawned will not despawn, though they might attack less.

Thats good to hear. So... in theory, if one would keep his wall further than the pollution spreads, there will never be an attack since no pollution reaches the aliens and they can't walk in?

As far as I am concerned grass (as ground) and trees absorb a certain amount of the pollution, so it won't spread out with a lower concentration until it covers the whole map.

I might be wrong but i have also seen native nests consuming pollution. I remember there was a nest which the pollution was farer back than usual around the nest. And some tiles where flickering on it. When it got removed the pollution was more spread there.

You are not wrong. Alien nests are the biggest absorbers of pollution. If you allow it to reach them.

Aha... I thought so because the pollution got really absorbed around it on my latest save. I could see a huge difference after clearing it.

Each tick, normal ground, water, trees, and biter nests will absorb a tiny amount of pollution.

Even if you upgrade to solar, the reason you still have pollution is that furnaces, assemblers, miners, pumpjacks, chemical plants, and refineries all still produce pollution.

Even electric pumps for pipes pollutes for some weird reason...

IIRC everything that uses electricity creates pollution. This is why Efficiency modules, while reducing power, also reduce the pollution generated.

I did understand that. I wondered, if I just clean a large area (with ressources) around my pollution and wall it up, wether the pollution will someday spread to the next alien nest or wether I can keep the cloud at a certain radius.

Of course, the more buildings are build, the more pollution is generated, the bigger the cloud gets. I just wanted some state like "Ok, until I expend the base over 50% of its current size, there shouldn't be any biter attack."

In my experience, so long as there are nearby forests to soak up your pollution, your pollution should actually decrease as you advance. The more advanced assembly buildings are considerably less polluting and other more advanced machinery provide additional module slots that allow you to decrease pollution by a significant amount. Although that last part assumes you prioritise using efficiency modules over the other two module types. At least this was the case for me. If you were to expand your base large enough then it would offset the lower pollution per building and net you an increase in pollution.

I have a Question too.
What about if I do not extend my factory and the pollution remains constant. Will the pollution spread further, say because the already polluted area can not absorb more pollution, or pollution (polluted area around my factory/polluted distance) remain constant?
Zaflis May 16, 2016 @ 2:07am
Here's a pic from my current world. The amount of factories is nowhere near to what i've seen other people do, but still i'm going to have a real war with the aliens before i can build a wall outside of pollution range:

100% of my power comes from solar btw.

i have a vast map too an managed it to build a wall outside my polluted area to the north side; and i had not a single attack ever since
