Multiplayer [SOLVED]
I might just post this on the Factorio official forums to see if an admin or dev can help, but can someone explain to me in steps EXACTLY how to setup a coop game with a friend? Port fowarding etc is just stuff I can't do easily

First you press play.

Then you press Multiplayer.

Then you press New Game.

Select your world settings press generate.

You can set the next screen settings to whatever and then press play.

You now have the server open.

Your friends have to join using you IP and this port :34197 You can find your IP by googling "my IP"

It will look something like this 172.822.45:34197 (Note this IP isn't real)

For port forwarding(and yes you DO have to forward) it's a bit different for each roughter try and figure out what name your roughter has and google guides for it online im sure some has made a fiew if you don't have an obscure one.

If you already have an open port you can change the directed port in the games confic file i have not done this myself so i can't go into detail here.

Good luck.

I was afraid I would get a reply like this, I was hoping there was an easier way around but thanks anyway, it'll help a bit

I cannot help with port forwarding on specific routers, that is something you just need to learn how to do. I can, however, tell you what ports you need to use when you port forward: 34197.
  1. To get to your router, open up command prompt (CMD) and type in "ipconfig"
  2. Then look for something called "default gateway" and "ipv4 address"
    • The default gateway is what you type into your internet browser, at which point you will be asked for a username and password (hopefully this is provided for you in your router box)
    • The ipv4 is your internal ip address (will be needed when port forwarding)
  3. When you get onto your router, go to the port forwarding section
    • Depending on the provider and router, what you are looking for (after you found the port forward page) should be one of the following: inbound/outbound, starting port/ending port, etc
  4. Type in "34197" into both start and end port section and select your ipv4 address or type it in where it is asked
If you did everything correctly, and I explained everything clearly, then when you host a multiplayer world, people should be able to join through your public ip address, which is different from your ipv4 address. To get your public ip address, open up your internet browser and just type in "what is my ip." The first result should be your public ip address.

Hopefully this helped. As I said before, I can't help specifically with port forwarding (since every router is different).

I can give you a bit more detail on port forwarding.

You will need atleast access to your roughters admin rights.

This includes login name and password if you can't get thies it will be pretty hard to forward.

If you don't have anyone tec-savy in your neer family or living partners that can help you don't be afraid to do somehting wrong if you do something that makes you insecure you can always reset your roughter (Little button somewhere behind or beneath).

Yeah, this is the problem, none of my friends are really technical, and I don't think I have the username and password, thanks for the replies anyway though guys

@Devoblivioner
You could always try calling your provider for help getting onto your router.

In regards to the comment below:
Sometimes the password is password.

If you have not changed the user or password they are usually defaulted to
Username:admin
Password:admin

Or blank password as in don't type anything.

try with capital first letter and without.

yeah, like I said before I'll try but I really don't think I'll get very far with this. I really do appreciate the help though.

Hamachi

...

Your welcome...
Lol it is one of the easiest ways, but I just don't trust 3rd party programs
Malibloo Apr 30, 2016 @ 2:50am
Hamachi is cancer. It has too many security flaws and it screws around with your network settings.

Also you're*

There's 4 things you need to make sure of, and you can pretty much google all of them.
1. Port forward your router.
This is always the first thing you should try, because you might not be able to approach your router. If you can't, because it's administered by someone else, you're ♥♥♥♥ out of luck. Or you can try to ask the person who's administering it.
Find your router on this site and follow the instructions: http://portforward.com/
If your router type isn't in there, try looking for a similar router, it might not be that different.

2. To port forward, you need to have a static IP on your computer.
This is something people always forget to tell you and the easiest thing to get wrong.
This screenie will tell you where to go: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5181268/StaticIP.png
The values in the last box will most likely be different than mine.
The first line is where you pick what IP would be yours, you did this in step 1 as well and you might need to change it. The last number is something you should pick, but should definitely be above 50 or so. I picked 77 because why not. The 5 (third number) is very likely 1 on your end.
Second line should stay 255.255.255.0
Third line is the address of your router, which should be 192.168.1.1. It's the same address that you access your router with.
Then you have the blacked out part. The DNS servers. To get these, open up a command (cmd) prompt and enter "ipconfig /all" Then look for the DNS Servers (about halfway down). Enter the first 2 in there. If you only have one, put 8.8.8.8 in the second one. This is a public Google DNS.

This is all presuming you're on a small (home) network, and not on anything bigger where IP's start with 172 or 10.

3. Make sure that it's not being blocked by your firewall.
Windows usually asks if you want to allow a program through your firewall. If you by accident press no, you'll have to do this. You can google this pretty easily.

4. Get your own IP. Your IP might change over time. Your IP also never starts with 192, that's your connection to your router/modem, not the internet.
Just go here: https://www.whatismyip.com/

I hope that's useful. I port forward every game with no issue, and never have to use decrepit programs like Hamachi or Tunggle.
If you have any further questions, or require clarification, feel free to ask.
skyshroudsylvan Apr 30, 2016 @ 9:24pm
This is ridiculous. Developers need a better way for people to connect to multiplayer. Not too many steam games have this much work required and need a 3rd party program. Port forwarding? WTF!? Sorry, I wasn't an IT grad. Never had a game give me this much crap unless it was decades old. Like, Jesus, paragraphs of jargon. Not worth 20 if you gotta do hours of searching to get a multiplayer game going. The Wiki for this is confusing. Shouldn't even hav multiplayer available if it's as confusing as this. FIX THS ♥♥♥♥ FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!

You do realize that this is a early development game where the main focus is content over multiplayer, right? They specifically say that the game is in its "alpha stages" too.

Actually, pretty much every game that makes you host, instead of you joining a public server involves you port forwarding. It has nothing to do with the developers. This is how PC's work.
Eightball May 1, 2016 @ 1:16am
If you are unable to port forward then you are going to be unable to host games on MANY PC games. The only hosted games like this that work without it are Peer 2 Peer (P2P) which btw is terrible.
Eightball May 1, 2016 @ 1:17am
Nobody can tell you what router you have except you. These days the usernames and passwords are usually on a sticker on them. It's not the game dev's fault if you are unable to learn how to use your own equipment.
