Interestingly enough, a month or so back the devs expressed an interest in ahving the game evolve INTO an RTS, where you manage multiple units and such from a command post. Let me see if I can find the post...
EDIT: For the life of me I cannot find the post I am referring to. I was sure it was recently, but I've gone back a year so far and can't seem to find it. Anyone else know what I am talking about?

Unfortunately, the Modding API doesn't have support for unit selection. These will just follow the player and engage enemies.
HAHA! That should be a part of the game really. XD
Try 4 years to this day :D

Still waiting on RTS mode T_T, I really want to build up a base RTS style, manufacture armies of dormant robots, transport them with trains, assembe and unleash them unto locals.
(all while controling them RTS style ofc, with box selection of army and movement/attack/formations and other commands)

You're right, it is reminicient of the allied light tank from RA (can't believe I never noticed it before, considering how much time I put into that game).
As to your other point, RTS functionality is on the list for POTENTIAL content post-release. I think we can all agree that the basebuilding aspect of Factorio kicks the pants off of just about any RTS past or present. The only thing it needs is proper unit control and maybe some different AI behaviors when you aren't directly controlling the units (different formations, how far they chase enemies before giving up and returning to where they were, control groups to organise different units, etc).
I do hope they pursue this idea in the future.
