Purging the planet
Is taking control of all territory on the map (killing all natives) feasible? It goes something like 2000km in each direction?

It's possible, the maps are practically infinite, though it might take a very long time

If the map is infinitely big then it would be *impossible* to clear it unless you have a special trick to kill an infinite number of aliens in a finite amount of time.

Its not technically infinite... Just might as well be. 2000 kilometers is waaaaay farther you want to run trains. Trust me on that one.

Maps got "smaller" in .13, but they are infinite in practical terms. Your computer would run out of memory waaaay before you explore everything, so unless you set the map to be very small is impossible to purge the natives.

when starting a new game you can set the map size, but if left blank as is default the world will grow as you move toward the edge.

Also the answer is no, unless you build over everything, the enemy bases will respawn

Not the default world size, it would take way too long. A more limited size, however, you can feasibly clear. Especially with the robot army mod, since you won't have to kill all the biters personally.

Bases don't respawn. Enemies migrate. That means that if you destroy every single spawner in the map natives are no more. However, that's impossible in regular map size settings.

Why would you want to purge one of your best resources?

"Best resources"
*Savage beasts that do nothing but destroy*

Bits that you only ever need in a very small amount very late game

if a roaming biter can get to a location where a base used to be (before you killed it), the base will respawn.

If you build new outer layers of walls around the cleared zone, it will stay clear.

Best method is:
1. kill bases along/near your desired new wall route. (I aim for narrow point between lakes)
2. build new wall with full defenses (turrets/power{line]/roboport/radar and repair pack supply and replacement walls (and robots)
3. kill bases along next desired section of wall.. Build..etc
4. Kill all remaining .bases between your new outer walled and defended system and your existing base.

Note. If you are solo, some of the bases you killed will respawn before you can complete a decent sized expansion, so re-visit and make sure every alien is dead between walls.
Late game will require lots of combat drones and MK2 armour fully kitted etc.

I hadn't done the math on that, you're right - at about 260 kph (max train speed), it would take over 7.5 hours to travel 2000km. Yeah, that's more than I bargained for. .____. Maybe we can get a mag lev train or hyperloop in the game.

I've started work on building a wall... we'll see if it stops attacks - in theory I shouldn't have to worry about raiding parties because the pollution cloud is entirely inside the walls, right?
