Is this achievement nullfied bythe laser defense armor addon?

Normally, "build" means "place on the graound". However, you may just want to stay on the safe side and not add personal lasers until you win the game and get the achievement.

Try out flamethrowers -- they are extremely effective against biters.

Holy necromancy Batman! To answer this question I just completed this achievement last night. I had used both personal laser defense AND flame thrower turrets during the play through. Placing a laser turret is what costs you the achievement.

You ought to be able to save the game, place a turret, then check the achievement criteria in the in-game achive panel (not the steam one) and see if it is now ineligible.

Confirmed. I opened the save game file I had right before I launched the rocket, placed a laser turret, and poof ineligible.
