https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hole_punch

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UDP_hole_punching

Your Firewall/Router is like a piece of paper blocking spitballs. Spitballs are the tiny packets between the game instances. The "NAT Punching" is a hole punch that makes an opening for the spitball to pass through the paper.

Yucky.

More technical

UDP hole punching is a method for establishing bidirectional UDP connections between Internet hosts in private networks using network address translators. The technique is not applicable in all scenarios or with all types of NATs, as NAT operating characteristics are not standardized.

Ok thanks! so would this allow me to play with friends without port forwarding?

It might-- as the more technical quote indicates, it is not applicable in all scenarios or with all types of NATs (routers/firewalls).

Steam Friends

An often asked for convenience for the Multiplayer is the integration with Steam Friends. Thanks to Ondra this has been already implemented. In the Browse Games Gui you can filter games that have some of your Steam friends in them. Then in the game details you would see your friends highlighted.

But more importantly (and conveniently) you can use this feature directly via Steam. In your steam client you will see your friends that are currently playing Factorio and you can just click and join them in the game. This translates to our internal game connection mechanism which might still ask you for a password if the game requires one.

Yes, in v0.13 it has been implemented and tested by the Devs. (Not players.)
v0.13 is due out tomorrow.
When it hits, it will hit the Experimental release (see pinned post for more details.)
If you do not participate in the experimental release, you will not get to test out the new features.
Once v0.13 is deemed stable (v0.13.(odd number)) it will be released to everyone and even those not participating in the experimental release will be able to enjoy the new features.

Expect bugs if you play with the experimental release.
