Peaceful mode or not?
I am using peaceful mode, as this is my first world, and I want to learn how the game works without having aliens wreck everything and kill me. Do most folks turn "peaceful" off, or do most folks use "peaceful" so they can focus on building?

i started without peaceful mode and never saw enemies for my first couple games (would usually remake after the first 5 or 6 hours with my improved knowledge of building). then i got an area with biters roaming through it and died like 1 hour in
Note that aliens don't attack you in normal mode if you don't pollute the environment.

They do if they send a colonization party your way, or if you get too close.

It's kind of impossible not to pollute... sure, you can minimize your pollution but virtually every entity in the factory creates pollution.
Playing on peaceful is pretty boring, especially when you know how to play it. Peaceful is made to learn the game for new players and for speedruns (in my opinion). So I always play with agressive monsters.
I'm interested in the survival aspect, so I never played peaceful, not even on my first playthrough. It was good experience, since you need to learn about the game mechanics while learning to deal with the natives. I also play with this "roguelike" rule: if I die, I start over. I never changed any map setting, everything is on default. I plan to go through more difficult settings (more enemies, less resources) further down the line.

Go for normal mode. The biters are after all a part of the game and you need to learn how to deal with them.
I think the attack is quit meaningless. It just end up with some annoying rutine work. So after serveral game, I just turn peaceful mode on. If every wave of attack is less frequency but more in strength, and there is a count down and with a indicator at which direction it will come to attack, I think it will more meaningful. Install the whole base with turent or laser find no fun to play.
off, because i set up turrets to defend the walls but it depends on how much pollution you are producing.
I kinda like peaceful more but I wouldn't mind some inbettween options. Mainly, a peaceful till you attack option.. and they attack you on sight but never form raid parties (untill you attack them). This is kinda what I expected peaceful to do really..

And an option where biters only evovle in bases touched by pollution.. So far away nests don't get massive biters and such as soon as your close nests do.. This would change the alien management from, the sooner you deal with them the easier they are.. but if you ignore them they get stronger.. I think I'd like this more then peaceful..

I started out on peaceful to get the basics then joined a friend and we started a world that wasnt peaceful. Tbh it was still rather boring early on. He keeps telling me they get more difficult, but in all honesty it seems to take too long. Then again I kinda rushed building a factory for ap rounds forthe turetts that are also fed automatically so that could hve something to do with it. We also destroyed alot of the nests nearby early on on foot with rifles and ap rounds.

I have yet to see large attacks because I'm constantly clearing nests as I expand outwards only a few of them get touched by polution before I or my friend destroys them. Yesterday we got up to tanks and well... its a party lol. Can't wait to see power armor/exo skeletons.
The great thing about this game is -- you can have as many save files/factories as you want, so you can play peaceful one time, a deathworld another time, and in between biter wildness on every other occasion! :-)

However that takes up double or more of your time if your doing a full playthrough of each

Well, it depends on how you play the game. I play because I enjoy the process, and designing different layouts, etc. I think I've "completed" at least 7 factories/saves or so.

I've noticed that some people play games to "win", and then they never play again. To me, Factorio is not a game about winning -- it's about possibilities and trying new things.

I guess Im in the category: Started the game in single player with max alien activity. Died lots of time but i did found a way how not to die and how to deal with aliens early on.

Now on multiplayer i have no problems whatsoever to thrive at any alien setting.

I suppose you can learn the game in peaceful mode but yeah- eventually you will have to learn how to deal with aliens. Better sooner than later.

I mean if you learn to cope with them early on theres nothing to stop you later on.
I see im not the only one who played on hardcore mode. Lolol. Yeah dude, once you master the aliens at hard you completely optimize how to keep your pollution imprint down while also forcing you to learn minimalist builds while rapidly multitasking. I think the key to success is to closely phase out what is unneeded and always have a over abundance of all materials when neccessary to keep production lines running when you shut down your mining and smelter setups to reduce your pollution imprints.

My favorite challenge, is to literally limit or heavily reduce spawning/generated resources while increasing the difficulty and size of enemy bases, terran segmentation, and minor map modding to patch up large unsync'd parts of the map (ie untraversable parts of the map) Its the greatest thing ever. After than i just go to town. A real challenge on vanilla is low on all resources and very small supplies, and then to make the enemies highly aggressive and increase their size, and then it becomes a race for weapon supremecy while sidlining automation for resource harvestiong coupled with keeping a small pollution imprint. Its a fun challenge and can take up to 28hours to beat in my best solo run through regarding free play challenge mode(s)
