Peaceful mode or not?
I am using peaceful mode, as this is my first world, and I want to learn how the game works without having aliens wreck everything and kill me. Do most folks turn "peaceful" off, or do most folks use "peaceful" so they can focus on building?

I just got the game a few days ago, and I'm still on my first game with peaceful mode disabled. I guess it's something that would be good to get ready for them at any moment. I guess it's a personal choice if you use it or not. I left it on for a good challenge, they haven't attacked me yet, from what i've experienced you seem to get alot of time to prepare for them to attack.

I wonder if you can change a peaceful mode world to regular in an existing factory world?

I started with a normal world and later restarted on peaceful. I wanted to learn the more complicated parts of the game without being distracted by attacks. I will be starting a new game on normal once I complete all the research and try everything out. I'm sure that lots of people never use peaceful, just a personal choice really - kind of like minecraft in that respect. I think there is a way to change to normal in a peaceful world, but it isn't something that can be done in the options menu.

I started with a Peaceful mode game, and definitely don't regret it -- there's a lot going on when you are first learning how to play the game. My next game, (and every one thereafter) has been with peaceful off, to provide more of a challenge.

Yes, you can turn peaceful mode off mid-game by using the console. Press ~ to activate the console, then type:

/c game.peaceful_mode = false

Then use:
/c game.forces["enemy"].kill_all_units()
...to kill, and reset all the biters. New ones will spawn right away with their new priorities.

This works in reverse if i set it to true, to enable peaceful, right?

peaceful mode certainly is the most comfortable way to learn the game. especially when you are playing alone.

i started my first game ever with two buddies on a server and we didn't use peaceful mode. it was kind of ok since one of them was very keen to build walls and turrets all the time so the other two of us could focus on economy and factory.
but after a lot of expansion and way more than 100 hours played on that map we had such a wide area covered and pollution contact with so many nests that the attack alarm went off every 30 seconds (no kidding) and that got really annoying really quick.

so next map we started on peaceful mode. but in fact it was so peaceful that it was plain boring. the map was deep red with pollution and nobody cared. we had no walls, no turrets, nothing.
at some point i ran off with the combat shotgun and some destroyer robots and a few minutes later i was back with more than 3000 alien artifacts. very big nests but very small challenge.
easy but not really entertaining, at least not on multiplayer. we launched the rocket just as quickly as everybody got bored.

yesterday i started my first solo map and while it is kind of messy it still comes along halfway nicely.
i used a big starting area to be safe for a reasonable time but without the impunity to totally do what i want and get bored quickly.
i think a big or very big starting area is the best way to go if you are after some kind of challenge at least at some point later into the game.

Started peaceful. Still peaceful.

tbh, aliens seem to be an (uneccessary) vicious diversion early game. A neccessary diversion in the end game sure, but with limited pollution reduction early, how do you get around them without taking 2 steps forward and 3 back? Death is permanent. (sans saves)

As a noob, perhaps there is more I need to understand here or... there's more content to be created for early game?

I never started peaceful ever. Not since day one, hell i struggled learning how to build while regreatting everymoment of it. in reality i learned how to rapidly throw together quick setups to make things just work, from cluttered messes to optimized setups thanks to this forced gameplay, enabling me to learn more about what to prioriatize based on the map terrain, resources, and how to go about moving in the game, alongside a variety of different methods to tackle challenges. If you play peaceful you lose alot of the forced mechanics learning aspect, but then again, i suppose if you just wanna tinker then yeah. But i enjoy the struggle, its about trying to find that happy medium to expand while equally paying attention, PAY major attention to your "pollution" levels, just a solid tip, i learned that pretty hard. In story mode (campaign mode) it really does teach you the basics throwing you into some basic prebuilt structures to learn from.

Always use saves
And focus more on defense

Also what is a sans?

Personally, I'm a wuss, I use peaceful mode and enjoy the building aspects of the game without any distractions from bitters?

if enemy is set on "normal" amount, no, i don't start peaceful. If i start on the most difficult setting, yes, until i can get some factory and deefnse going. It is way too much enemy on highsest difficulty in the beginning.

I guess Im in the category: Started the game in single player with max alien activity. Died lots of time but i did found a way how not to die and how to deal with aliens early on.

Now on multiplayer i have no problems whatsoever to thrive at any alien setting.

I suppose you can learn the game in peaceful mode but yeah- eventually you will have to learn how to deal with aliens. Better sooner than later.

I mean if you learn to cope with them early on theres nothing to stop you later on.
