Are There Any Games Which Have Infinite Map/World Like Factorio
Hello,

Title is clear. Just curious for compare - Builder games with unlimited map/worlds...

https://store.steampowered.com/app/860890/

(From Voxel Tycoon)
Infinite World
Explore an unlimited, procedurally-generated world filled with unique biomes, from deserts to arctic tundra.

These titles also have infinite map as far as I know.

Regards,

DSP doesn't exactly have an infinite map but with 64 solar systems that have 3 planets each on average; making for 172 total planets on average it's safe to say you'll be hard pressed to utilize all of that available space unless you go for extreme sized megafactories... with the option to set resources to infinite too it becomes even harder and with procedural generation at the seed of each universe it makes for boundless possibilities...

Not infinite, like you asked for, but pretty darn near it...

Oh, Dyson Sphere Program, right?

I'll definitely look into it.

Thank you.

factorio doesnt have an infinite map
its just to big to cross

That is factually incorrect. The map is infinite UNLESS you specifically set the limits on game creation.

When you try to correct somebody try to at least google the thing. Because the real factually correct answer is that even if you don't set limits the map in factorio is only 2000000 tiles x 2000000 tiles.

I stand corrected.

correct

Well, @Xeno42, @PunCrathod, can you point me at an example of a truly infinite map? One that would never collapse due to code having it's limits?

Sadly I have not come across a game that has a truly infinite map. Plenty of games where you run out of ram/disk space before you can explore the entire functioning map but none that would be able to scale infinitely if you had infinite ram/disk space.

Isn't that simply impossible by definition? No matter how optimized the game would be, as long as the map size is "truly infinite" every realistic computer would eventually run out of space at some point.

The only way I could imagine a "truly infinite map" would be one where the map you already have explored is deleted at some point and when you go back it is randomized again. Not sure if that would qualify for an "infinite map" though.

In this case, we should distinguish between "unlimited in theory" and "limited in practice" due to technical possibilities. Even if a game has unlimited/infinite map in theory, it does not seem possible in practice due to technical possibilities (hardware capabilities, etc.). Still, of course, it's enough "limitlessness" for all of us that its boundaries are not easily visible. :)

When I did a little research, I found out that Factorio has a map limit that can take years to discover like Minecraft, and even if not in theory, it seems to be quite unlimited in practice.

Exactly my point :)

I could design a system that would scale infinitely if given infinite memory. Very easily in fact. However all the games I have come across have opted for an even simpler "big enough that nobody will have enough memory to fully explore" approach.

realistically an unlimited map is pointless. its just content that will never be seen. factorio just had it super big so you dont hit a border. ultimately that is the goal in order to increase immersion. nothings worse then slamming face first into an invisible wall

Anyone with very basic knowledge of coding could do that. No one does that, because there is no point. it's a waste of resources and time.

So I believe I stand uncorrected, Factorio's map is for all means and purposes unlimited. I will also keep telling girls they look great instead of "you look adequately fitting in common social beauty standards". Art of communication is sometimes not to be precise ;)
