Why no Workshop?
I was thinking of trying out some mods but there's no Workshop. I know I can just amnually install them... but why no Workshop?

There's no Steam workshop because there's one in game. (I prefer Steam workshops but ehhh, whatever) I guess it's just not as high on the priority list as other things.

As far as I understand what the devs have said -- there will be no steam workshop, simply because the in-game mod portal offers them a chance to code it the way they want and add any feature they want to include.

Even though it's still an early version, it's quite easy to use. Try it out Sherio!

So not only do I have to make an account for some website beut I have to link my Steam account to that website to access any mods?

seems a bit much.

It's worth it. I would do it three times over for some of the mods available (RSO, FARL, Blueprint String/Killrogg's Blueprint Manager, Rail Tanker). Definitely worth the minor hassle.

That is a complete non-sequitur - if Factorio hosted the mods on Steam workshop (or Nexus, or whatever) then these mods could be found just as easily in a different place. There are hundreds of games with thousands of mods which do not use Factorio's mod manager, so the implication that the Factorio mod manager is required for high quality mods to exist is obviously false.

I think the factorio mod portal needs an overhaul to provide more info, icons, be easier to read and navigate, etc.
Maybe like the Sporepedia but with factorio mods and only 10% of them are junk instead of 99.8% of everything being along the lines of "killTANK!!!" without any paint and just 3 objects.

This is just the very first version of the mod portal. It will evolve!

I don't want to be mean but, just the time you took to write that reply, you would be done already ...

Linking steam to their website. How does that work? Are there privacy / security concerns with that? I don't want the risk of having to change my steam account because their website got hacked.

How does the linking work?

It used OpenID which is provided from Valve/Steam itself. They provide the website with just an unique identifier ID. See unter https://steamcommunity.com/dev -> "Steam OpenID Provider"

I actually had trouble for about 2 hours getting it linked. I kept getting errors on signing in to install mods, then spent the rest of the day looking mods up because there's about a half a sentence describing each one.

But it's done now. Thanks for your <sarcasm> super helpful </sarcasm> response.
