What fuel to put in boiler

So if you couldn't tell by the title I am fairly new to the game and I am tired of constantly putting coal into all of my things so I wanted to make power. So I know how to set up the boiler and the steam engine but i don't know what fuel to put into the boiler. I have tried coal and wood but is there a actual fuel item or something that I have to make?

boilers can handle wood, coal and solid fuel. make sure the boiler also has water leading into it

Ok yeah I didn't have any water going into it so that was my problem. I should of realized that you need water to make steam lol

What you need is a conveyor system -- mine coal with your electric mining drills, have them output onto a conveyor belt, and use inserters to feed the coal into the boilers.

(If you have not doen so, you should play the campaign (aka "tutorial").
