There is always the good old brute-force solution as well, wiping the spawners and worms with artillery from a well defended position.
With enough research, personal laser defense can take care of enemies for you, similarly a SMG with uranium ammo can be surprisingly effective.
Rocket launchers can also turn both enemies and nests into mush, especially with nukes.
If you don't mind cheating a bit, you can ditch your body and move without it (you fly with no collision and you never agro anything).
Earlier in the game the tank makes it possible, but not easy.
You lose a spidertron every time it shoots but it also shows that you really mean it.
(it's a joke in case it wasn't clear, don't put nukes in your spidertrons, they cost way too much to produce to be used as disposable nuke launchers)
