Maybe upgrading your machine is a good idea. 6 years old processor just ain't enough especially when running big bases.

You can try low quality textures and disable smoke etc.

New version 0.17 (week 9?) should have some improvements on graphics performance.

My old laptop has a first gen I3 and worse gfx than the OP and still runs a 1k SPM megabase quite perfectly, its a sprite based game not the latest Assassin's Creed and the OP's hardware should be perfectly adequate, its almost certainly a software/configuration issue rather than a hardware problem.

Tried turning the graphics options down? 0.16 introduced some hi-rez textures, which raised the minimum VRAM requirements, compared to 0.15. Set sprite quality to "medium" if you have less than 3-4 GB VRAM.

Are you using any mods? Disable them (some can be poorly coded, & cause performance issues).

Are you using discord overlay? If so, try disabling it & see if that helps. Then turn off all other 3rd party apps & disable the steam overlay too.

The problem is most likely an issue with your graphics settings vs hardware config, or due to a 3rd party app hogging system resources. Try troubleshooting the issue, before claiming that the "game is bugged"...

(FYI, comparing the full game installed via steam to the websites demo version is not a good idea. Try downloading the full package instead from the website to get a proper comparison.)
Its 4GB GTX 960.

Can you read? Demo 0.16 is working good. Steam version is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up.
I played tutorial on steam and demo.

I also have a gtx 960, 2GB. You had not bothered to list the VRAM of your card.

Did you try ANY of the suggestions I made? Did YOU read the last line of my reply?

Acting aggressive & insulting to others will not help you get assistance to fix the issue...

I'm calling BS here. OP insulting those that try and offer some help, insists it's Steam problem not their own computer.

Did you expect anything else from a Mac user? They're an arrogant lot, and you're beneath them. After he finally gives up that Mac for a PC, he'll likely turn to Linux for awhile until the gets tired of creating "does this game run on Linux" threads. So we're looking at a couple years before he's one of us. Just leave him to his Starbucks. It isn't worth it. Personally, I think it's the skinny jeans that cuts off blood flow or something. Unproven, of course, but it's my theory.

Oh. Running on an unsupported configuration. Well, good luck to you.

I'm also experiencing this on a Macbook that was able to run 0.16 very well (was always impressed with how well the game ran and have clocked hundreds of hours on this computer).

0.17 unfortunately appears to be struggling to process input events, seemingly buffering them as a lower-priority process than something else. This effect is most notable when zooming in and out, but it also happens when I'm trying to walk. For example, when I first start a new campaign I try to move to the right. At first, I don't move, and then I let go of my key. Then the character moves, roughly for the same amount of time that I pressed the key down. It almost feels like I'm playing over the internet (I'm not) with a really bad lag.

I tried lowering all of the graphics settings to their lowest possible values and restarting the game, but input is still lagging behind unfortunately.

I love factorio, but as it stands the 0.17 release is unplayable on my macbook :(

@Featherless ~ have you tried toggling V-sync on or off? I saw some posts recently by a few mac users with similar-sounding issues.

You can also press F4 to open the debug menu & toggle the "show UPS/FPS" option to gain some more info:

The numbers should be hovering around 60/60 if the game is running smoothly.
- If the UPS and FPS are dropping equally (eg 20/20), then the CPU is the bottleneck. This happens to everyone eventually as the factory grows, but can also be caused by other apps hogging system resources (or if you use a badly-coded mod).
- If the UPS is holding around 60 but the FPS is dropping lower, even when zoomed-in, then it is the GPU struggling to keep up. Lowering graphics settings to medium sprites & enabling some of the other options often helps (tree mipmaps, lower train rotations, etc. & disable smoke & clouds).

I turned everything down to the lowest settings I could (and turned off V-sync). The ups/fps numbers are hovering pretty steadily at ~55 and ~59, but when I zoom in or out all keyboard input still lags until zooming stops.

I just re-installed 0.16 and it's running buttery smooth (basically the same fps, but all graphics settings turned up) with a fairly large factory.

It makes me think something changed in the input handling code between 0.16 and 0.17 that's affecting the ability for keyboard and mouse interrupts to take effect; possibly the main game run loop pump is getting flooded and input events aren't processed in a timely fashion anymore as a result?

Ah and to clarify as well: I'm not using any mods or additional features. This is stock game running on the same mac with very different keyboard/mouse input experiences between 0.16 vs 0.17

Same issue on Mac. Turning off V-Sync did make the controls respond much better. But the result is pretty bad screen tearing . . . anyone figure out a good balance of graphics settings?

youll have to experiment, turn everything off and add stuff back while testing.
