Coal is also used in smaller amounts for plastics, which is required in all science recepies except the first 2.
I don't burn any coal, but I find it pretty balanced. The most compact way to store ore is in the ground. It isn't going anywhere.
I use Coal Liquification as my source to making Lube (from Heavy not used to resupply next cycle), Solid Fuel (from Light) and Sulfur (from the Petroleum). Other option is to just crack everything into Petro after Heavy resupply amount. There are numerous combinations you can use the oils gotten from a Coal Liquification setup, it's just a matter of deciding for yourself which you wanna do, if you decide you use your excess Coal this way.
*Edit* Coal is also used in the Poison and Slow Capsules, if you choose to use them.
If your endgame is building a megabase to launch rockets (or do research) as quickly as possible, you'll end up going from using 4 blue belts of coal for plastic to moving plastic production to a separate sub-factory because trains are the only practical way to move that much coal.
As always: having enough of anything means that your factory should be bigger.
Military science might be a good idea!
And I know it's easiest to build over deposits, but I'm trying to clearcut this world.
So many times I've build an efficient facotry, measure production, and created a well oiled machine! But... What if I just kill, Everything?? What if I just expand mt base, forever? I'll consume and store All ore, and create an inpenitrable defenseive wall, and this can all be done using small and easily managed factory lines.
Ths time I'm just having fun taking over, and it's just started to seem weird how much coal I've collected.
You could go to your coal chests and shoot them. Hundreds of chests. You don't need that much Coal.
