An easier way to take manual control of trains?
Is there an easier way (keyboard shortcut?) to take manual control of trains than climbing in the train, opening the control window, clicking the 'manual' toggle, then closing the window before I drive the train, then reversing the whole process when I'm done?

I suck at trains. I spend a lot of time driving trains through tangled intersections. Any clews on manual overrides (besides 'git gud') would be appreciated.

You can click on the train in your minimap and that will open the train's consist so that you can switch it to manual if its on automatic or switch it to automatic if it is on manual with out being inside the train. If you want to drive it on manual you have to be inside it. Your best bet may be to just open your save and rework your intersections. You can post screen shots of problems and we forumites can help you with crossovers and signals if you want.

Train automation can be toggled independently of passengers boarding the train so it would not make much sense to bind both actions to the same key.

All intersections are going to be very difficult to manually navigate because trains travelling at 239km/h give you minimal time to press the left/right buttons.

Your best bet is board a train and order it to drive where you want to go; this also prevents other trains from crashing into you.

to this point: you can order the train to drive wherever you want it to go on the rail network by pressing ctrl and clicking on the map in the train window. You can also see there the path that the train will take. This function makes manual train driving with arrow keys obsolete

The easiest/laziest way to use the train system to get around (but not the safest) is to just whip an engine out of your pocket, hop in set a temporary train stop as your destination. Then hop out and pick up the engine. If you haven't used a temp train stop feature, you can do it by opening the train GUI and CTRL-left click your destination. A safer/better long term way to get around is to create small 'PAX' stations around your factory for use by short passenger access trains only. If I remember correctly, you can keep your PAX train in manual, but add each of the stops and simply choose which you want to go to when you are ready to go there.

J toggles between manual and schedule when you get in the train. your keybinding may very though so you may have to set it initially. could also be from the smart train mod, but i don't believe so.
