For power generation, you unlock the portable solar panels through research (red and green science).
Those produce a small amount of power, and only during the day but it allows you to get some simple stuff in your armour (like the belt immunity for example).
Later in the tech tree (yellow science) you will be able to research a portable fusion generator that will be your main source of power for power armour (but it's too big to beb useful in the modular armour).
A single portable solar panel only provides you with 30kW (during the day).
Night vision takes 10kW (during the night) and is able to store 120kJ (10kW for 12 seconds).
Belt immunity takes 100kW (always) and stores 100kJ (so 1 second).
You can have batteries to store power if you produce more than you can use but if you need more energy then you need more solar panels.
That version of the armour is very small so you can't do much with it, it's more a taste of what power armour and its mk2 offer.

MkII powered armor has quite a few more available slots. This is how my construction armor is set up.

The power generation was my issue too! and i cant wait to get some construction droids!
I put the game down after less than hour nearly a year ago because i hated it.
But after loving Factory Town, Dyson Sphere, Satisfactory, I was baffled why I didnt like Factorio... turns out it was UI / controlling/navigation. After forcing myself to pour over the tips and tricks, and the controls panel and learning what buttons did what I really started loving this game!
Extra question for things that just dont seem to work: my game says (TAB) is supposed to swap my equipped weapon, but I cant get it to work. I've even mapped it to mouse button 4, but that just opens my inventory.
I'm assuming this is just a doh moment that I didn't read prompts or tutorials or something, but i cant make heads or tails of it.
++Any good explanations for how logistic systems work in Factorio? It took me months to figure out and get comfy with ONI's Logic system.
If it opens the inventory it probably means that you bound mouse button 4 to open inventory as well.
You can always reset the changes you made for the controls by going to the controls menu and clicking the red circle in the top right.

The wiki has a lot of great indepth pages.
You can also go to youtube, there are several youtubers that made tutorial series about the game, maybe it will be better for you since it's not in written form.
OMG thank you. It didnt occur to me that my handgun needed its own ammo (like, if it uses same ammo why cant slot 1 work with slot 2?) After putting in ammo under it it works.
I'm still trying to get trains done, (atm thinking Satisfactory trains is simpler, but i'm not struggling yet) but will look into the logic systems later! thanks!
And yeah, youtube vids are more helpful than trying to read through blocks of text.
Now I am going to check to see if bullet fire rate increases also increase pistol speed....
For me, it wasnt about having an upgrade, it was about trying to figure out my hotkeys I just read, in which the game said TAB would swap my equipped weapon, but it didnt work. (because i didnt realize despite sharing ammo, they dont share ammo slot)
I'm still figuring things out. Just (i think) balanced my first oil set up to handle 12 refineries.
But i'm off topic to the modular armor
-that said; do the constructor bots run off electricity from the modular armor?
If they are launched from a roboport, they will use the nearest roboport of the same network to recharge and dock.
If they are launched from your power armour's personal roboport (well, the robots are in your inventory in that case) then they will use your armour's power to recharge and your inventory to dock.
Interestingly they will also use your inventory as their "storage chest" in that case as well instead of logistics chests.
What is the earliest way / power source to get energy into a power armor / modular armor, that is NOT**** the solar panel?
I was hoping to get the achievement for no solar panel / power along with no lazers, but I don't know all the ways to power the armor.
