there is no benefit of it having to make it return to the right corner though...

ugh this is dumb change a ui and leave an option to change how you like it

There is currently no way to change it. It feels like it was designed and implemented by a left handed person and its causing fits to many right handed people especially the ones that were used to it being optimal for right handed people.

Well, if you were to use your eyes to look at the right side of the screen then you would soon discover that the right side of the screen is where information relating to the object is displayed.

If you want to be able to see your weapons and armour bar then it is a good idea to display it somewhere where it won't be hidden by the contents of your logistic network.

Do you really think that overlapping text will improve the Factorio experience?

I guess they could move the minimap and the info box to the left side of the screen to make room for the weapons and armour bar on the right but that would be a much bigger change than 1.0 to 1.1

That is just not correct. With that logic the Windows Start Menu should be on the right. It's a Left-to-right reading pattern, not hand dominance.

I can't remember or find if they specifically mentioned this in an FFF. However you can attach it to the toolbar instead from what I've seen
EDIT: Yes in "interface" options, tick the option "Tool window next to quick bar" might be easier for you

Left to right reading pattern isn't consistent world wide. Nor is the side of the street you drive on consistent world wide.

As I said it FEELS like it was designed and implemented by a left handed person and being ambidexterous myself I'll stand by that statement.

It is a minor annoyance that it was switched to the left side, but it is not undoable. Though I would have prefer if it was not swapped sides, since it has always been on the right side. If anything this have been set up so one could choose where that bar is along with the bar with all the information to allow for some minor customization of the UI to improve accessibility for a righty or lefty.

for me, after having only just upgraded to 1.1, i am finding the altered placement of the building interaction interface needs some getting used to - but that is just because i trained myself on the previous placement - and likely there were many previous iterations of various parts of the interface that were initially jarring when they changed, but now feel like they are the only way it has ever been

and to comment on a previous point, i do recall not being able to see the full information for some buildings due to it being obscured by the weapon panel - so the new placement makes sense

and i expect we will all get used to it

plus i wouldn't be surprised if the UI is moddable (i keep meaning to some modding, but vanilla has kept me going for so long that i haven't even played with mods yet, let alone build my own lol)

I can see you point, since with some mods (I've only used Bob's heavily) it can have it's use of seeing more. Just wished that I had some degree of freedom to change the layout to personal preference. Though give some time I'm sure someone will make a set of mods that make minor changes to the UI, and given more time it will become part of the game (examples of features that were once mods: fluid wagons, personal roboport, and blue prints).

The thing that I find most jarring about it is early in the game when I'm still handcrafting things.

Why change it, though? It was on the right for over two years. Why the sudden, unnecessary, change?

I think there is a very good reason why this was implemented personally.

I have eye sight issues that require me to increase the size of the UI. I have to increase it by 150% to be able to read the text.

Moving the weapon slots over to the left hand side allows me to see more of the info panels when highlighting some in game items when either selecting them or hovering the mouse over them.

When the UI is increased to this kind of size it means that some of the Info panels have the bottom part of the panel cut off and this change helps with that.

For those that want it changed back i would implore them to give some thought for people like me. I do not think it will take long before people adjust to it being placed on the left as people tend to adapt to changes fairly quickly

But it doesn't require moving it from the right to the left to fix that issue. I'm glad you're able to see all the tooltip now. I certainly understand having to increase UI scale. Some games I have to do that, too. But this fix could have been done without moving UI object. Though I doubt this is why they moved it.

Have a look at the following screen shot.

https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198850800736/screenshots/

In this screen shot you can see in the info panel on the right I am currently able to view the contents of a chest just by hovering the mouse over the chest. If I need to look through several chests which have multiple items in them to find items that I need or want it is far easier to hover the mouse over the chest than it is to have to open 6, 10 or even more chests to find the items I require.

If the weapons tab was left where it was on the right I would not be able to view the contents of the chest via the info panel as the weapons tab would cover up the portion of the window that displays what is in the chest.

There are a fair few info panels where useful information is covered in this way by the weapons tab for people like myself when the UI is increased by 150%.

There are admittedly several ways that this could be solved.

1. Make the info panels smaller which would then need another increase in the size of the UI for people like me and would further compound problems due to the rest of the UI scaling that would come along with the increase.

2. Redesign the info panels which would require lot of work.

3.Reduce the size of the mini map which would also come with issues for people with sight issues like me. It would likely make the mini map unusable for people like me.

4, Make the info panels moveable so that the player can place them where they want them which I would think will also take a fair amount of work.

Moving the weapons panel to where it has been moved to seems like the easiest route to solving the issue to me.

The layer of the tooltip/info panel can be adjusted. It didn't require moving the weapons tab to the left. It doesn't require a redesign, just changing the priority of the layer. Nothing needed to moved, nothing needed to be resized. I understand the points you're bringing up. I'm saying that the issue you're describing didn't require moving weapons tab.

The easiest solution would have been to change the UI layer priority for the issue you're describing. Moving the tab from one side of the screen to the other requires work that doesn't even guarantee to fix such a problem. That's why I highly doubt this was why they did that.

You can see UI priority layer in action with tooltips. Mouse over something, the tooltip has higher priority, so that it shows up in front of things behind it. Change that layer priority and the tooltip can show up behind things, like your inventory window.

By the way, your screenshot link didn't work. ;p

I asked why they moved it hoping someone would have an actual answer, though.
