coal rocks thing of past or on specific terrains?

I trying figutre out how to get coal rocks to spawn on my maps. but all i can find is old videos that talk about how to use them in speed running. do they still show up in game or maybe someone can help me learn how to get them at starts of my maps? or are they thing of past speed runs?

Coal rocks still spawn. They are more common in desert terrain and less common in forest terrain.

A desert start is more difficult than a forest start so it kind of balances.

IMO not balanced at all - the pollution spread for a desert start is crazy with no forests around. Larger rocks add some character to the biome though.

What I mean by kind of balances is that it gets you off to a fast start. You can get iron plates up and running much faster, which gets you to turrets and ammo production much faster. Pollution isn't the only thing that increases evolution. Time also increases evolution. Getting research and defenses up early is important on a desert start. Getting a large amount of coal with your stones saves you quite a bit of time.
