When you're setting up your defenses, try to take the land between lakes and defend that.
It's less land to cover and you won't need as many turrets.
Some would even call these choke points...
Get construction bots going too; they'll repair things for you so you don't have to.
Laser turrets can take a bit of a punishment before giving up, so no rush.
You should probably check on your power situation while your turrets are firing.
They might be drawing too much power to shoot effectively.
Layering turrets is also a good idea. Biters are faster than the flames from a flamethrower turret but the flames that miss the biters crisp the spitters that are following in their wake.
If you neglected to make sufficient walls you can use all that spare wood to make wood boxes as temporary walls or use surplus stone furnaces as temporary walls while you get wall production set up.
I don't really have much to add to what others have said. I don't know what to do other than spend the time to automate walls, turrets, and ammo. Place more turrets than you think you need. And double walls, or cleverly-placed walls to make them run around are helpful.
At some point with research, power armor, etc. you cross a line where it gets much easier.
The nests will eventually re-spawn, but It'll give you some time to work on the factory. Then it's just a case of rinse and repeat.
- upgrade to yellow factories or blue ones if you dont have yellow
- start building lots and lots of solar panels and the batteries for storing surplus
- do not cut or burn down large amounts of trees as trees will absorb some pollution
- try landfilling lakes as the grass that starts growing on the empty ground will absorb more pollution than the water, dont fill the lake entirely but keep a moat and create only a small access which you can use as a chokepoint to defend, fill a little bit and blueprint the filled in area to make a bigger patch then bp that one and so on until you have a workable size for it.
the actual landfilling is done with construction bots ofcourse
- using nuclear fuel instead of fossil fuel might help as well
you can kill of the nests, i usually use a railgun for that but once you hit a nest with the first shot they will come charging at you so dont make the mistakes i did by not shooting from a well defended position and do not autoload a larger train with many railguns as they will come in swarms
i read that the nests dont actually respawn but given high enough pollution a settler bug will be hatched and he will move out and start a new colony towards the source of the pollution.
i never saw one myself but just killing the nests is not enough. i havent seen the behemoths though.
so far i only defended my resource outposts with a tower defence like setup but i havent used the double wall idea. as i mainly use the bullet turrets i have to refill as well which becomes a bigger pain as i am stretching out more and more
for an oil resource i build a small setup for making liquid fuel for the flamethrower line behind the shooting turrets. i dont know if you can make a mainly flamethrower setup (maybe backed up with some lasers) so you dont need to run around with ammo. i havent tried logistics bots to refill the ammo, dont know if that will work.

They stun nearby biters if the explosion doesn't kill them, but having bots fly out to replace them can get problematic.
Slap some down where you think the biters are going to walk and your base is safe for a few attacks.
