Is there a campaign after the demo?
I couldn't find this answer anywhere.
I'd like to play this wit the wife, but I don't want just an open sandbox or random scenarios... at least not to start.
I'm hoping that there is a campaign like the demo where you progressively unlock stuff. A story would be a bonus. Thanks!

i haven't tried it, but there is this on the mod portal:

https://mods.factorio.com/mod/Nauvis-Post-Collapse

which looks like it has a big custom built map to explore, with possibly some story content

as well as various other scenarios including this little pack:

https://mods.factorio.com/mod/JNF

which include a preserved copy of the final level of the original campaign (but which may need some tweaking to work on version 1.0 or later, since it was removed from the main game quite some time ago), as well as a commando campaign, and a challenge based on one of the achievements

again i have't tried it (i played the preserved campaign level when it was in the main game, but i haven't tried it using the mod), but i am sure many have and could provide more info

there are also big expansions like Space Exploration and Krastorio 2 which again i haven't played (still only playing vanilla 2000+ hours in, but i will get to mods soon) - but i hear great things about these two - and i understand they add lots of new tech to unlock - and Space Exploration allows you to go to space (obviously lol), and i believe also colonise other planets

so - i would suggest you look at the mod portal at:

https://mods.factorio.com/

but as for your main question:
- no, there isn't another campaign like the demo campaign in the standard game
- but there are challenge modes (production and supply challenge, limited space challenge, rush to launch a rocket, and a few more, including co-op versions)
- there are also all sorts of different kinds of map generator presets for the freeplay (a very narrow ribbon world, an island, a world with very spread out resources to encourage trains and a few more centred around the biters)
- and the freeplay mode is HIGHLY customizable, so you would be able to modify the settings to e.g. remove all the biters, or have massive or tiny patches of ore, or make the technologies much harder or easier to research, as well as changing the frequency of the terrain types

also:
i personally think the achievements for this game are some of the best i have ever seen

i don't normally bother with achievements, but i plan to get every one for this game

and some of them really are a campaign in themselves, e.g:
- launch a rocket only crafting a max of 111 items by hand (can be considered pure factorio where everything requires a proper supply chain)
- launch a rocket without using solar power (if playing with biters enabled means you will get attacked more and more and they will evolve more due to massive pollution from all your power plants)
- launch a rocket without building any laser turrets
- build a train within 90 minutes
- have a train travel a really long way
plus lots of productions milestones and other ones that show off some mechanics that you may not otherwise see (i hadn't burned down a forest until i went for the pyromaniac achievement)

so quite a few of these really are little campaigns - since they often make you play the game differently for each, or focus on specific things, and have an end goal (some require you to get all the way to launching the rocket, but many don't)

also, as mentioned, the researching and unlocking of the tech tree can be considered the main campaign - since each tier of technology requires a bigger and more complex factory to chain together all the components - requiring more resources, which may require travelling further, and so may require a rail system, or clearing biters from an area etc, as well as actually getting all the supply lines connected

so there are plenty of missions to embark upon, but they are often of your own choosing (i expect most players have had the feeling of planning an expedition or a raid or a large scale infrastructure or transportation project during a playthrough)

plus if you are playing co-op then one of you can be going off on scouting missions while the other is building etc (i only play solo, but i imagine having a second pair of hands would make the game more interesting, and allow for more varied missions)

also getting Blue Science (called Chemical Science these days i believe) automated is a big challenge - with the previous 3 science packs each being progressively more challenging than each other but relatively straightforward, and this one being a big step up - but also the gateway to loads of cool technology

and then the launching of the rocket is the big final mission of the vanilla game

anyway - i hope some of this helps - and i am sure i or others can help if you have further questions

there is a campaign sort of thing but it's more like survival than anything else, just with growing your factory

No, there is no campaign. There are some game modes like surviving waves but yeah no story. Normaly you play and get dropped on the map and you get the basic stuff the rest you need to unlock by getting more and more tech and expanding your factory.

I'm hoping that there is a campaign like the demo where you progressively unlock stuff.
This isn't an RTS game where you can challenge the player to defeat an enemy with low tech weaponry - "unlocking stuff" is the entire point of the game.

It's obviously still possible to have arbitrary "produce X" or "kill Y enemies" missions on separate maps but they they decided against this because it would be excruciatingly tedious to have to redo all the early game setup every time you move to a new map.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

@Drizzt Thank you very much for the detailed reply! Not /exactly/ what I had hoped for*, but still sounds promising and I'm sure to get my money's worth regardless.

*Ultimate hope would have been Warcraft III campaign +factorio ? hehehe

glad to have been of some help :-)

also, there is a full map and scenario editor in the game - and so even without programming knowledge it should be possible to set up some interesting stuff - and then with the programming part of it i guess more complicated events could be triggered (and maybe the genius modders out there could add heroes and player stats and maybe even enemy factions and missions :-))

anyway - if you do decide to buy it, hopefully it will be fun for you - and hopefully for both of you :-)

If you are interested in custom map generation/scenarios, there are people who do this sort of stuff. Check out redmew community: https://redmew.com/ , they even host their own servers, or you can download their maps and play them offline or with friends

So I bought it, and while the wife isn't interested (not pretty enough) I'm loving it as you can tell by the hundreds of hours I put in. Thanks again!

hey - glad you're enjoying it :-)

your playtime isn't visible on your profile - but since this thread was from 6 weeks ago i guess you have played a lot lol :-)

also, if you do want to make your play time visible without making more of your profile visible, all you need to do is write a review for Factorio, since your reviews are public, and reviews show play time

anyway - glad the game is good for you - although possibly i should be apologising to your wife, since not only is the game not to her tastes, but now her husband likely has a severe addiction and is commandeering the PC for extremely long sessions :-)

also - i have now played some of the Space Exploration mod - and it is everything i could have hoped for and more - and so there is that to look forward to once you decide to move beyond the vanilla game

anyway - again - glad that you're getting good value from the game

unfortunately i know of no good rehab facilities that are capable of curing the addiction

so all i can suggest is that you set an alarm to remind you to eat :-)

and don't worry about that new voice in your head - we all have it - just repeating that same phrase over and over....

the factory must grow
The Factory Must Grow
THE FACTORY MUST GROW

it's perfectly normal - nothing to worry about - everything will be fine

don't worry

it's ok

all you need to know is.....

The Factory Has You Now

;-)
