How to rent a dedicated server?

Hi, I'd like to rent a dedicated server to play with 1 or 2 friends, I know nothing about hosting...

What service are you guys using? Looks like there is alot...
Do you have any advices?

Why do you need a dedicated server? It doesn't make sense to me, just host a session on 1 pc and let others connect to it

To clarify a bit: having dedicated server will not give you any advantages in ping or UPS(game speed, updates per second). The only case where having one makes sense is if you want to run some map 24/7 for some reason, which most likely is not what you want,

A dedicated server lets people connect when they have time without necessarily needing all of them to be available at the same time.
It's pretty nice when you have people from different time zones or with different times for their gaming time.

If it's just with a couple friends though, one of you hosting is most likely going to be just fine.

I just want my friends to be able to play an hour longer than me if i want to sleep earlier than them and turn off my computer :)

When you stop the host, your friend will be given an option to save the game on their own computer. They can play it then normally in single player mode or with somebody else. When you come back, they can host the game in their turn, or send the save file back to you.

Yes, this is how we used to do, but really, i'd like to know more about dedicated servers to avoid that.

What if we do that, but then i wake up earlier and want to play?
I have to wait for the save.

Guys I'm not saying i'm gonna buy a server, i just want to know what do you think about factorio.zone, wich is free, or other solutions, i see some are cheap, i just wanted advices...

Excellent service, reasonable prices, great support 24/7 by peeps who seem to know what they are doing, FTP and all that jazz so you can do as you please with your server when you please (even screwing it up is an option :P ) ... I've hosted both minecraft servers with them as well as a factorio server at some point


I can not talk about that free stuffs you mentioned but just know that free stuffs is never free ... just saying
