Windows 10 HDR flickering
Hi,there is little issue in Windows 10 with HDR ON.When you move, then screen flickering, flashing. Its not so big,but eyes can suffer after few hours of playing.

I am in HDR Windows mode on (144Hz),in desktop and also in every game,so disabling HDR is not a solution.I dont want to turn it off because of one game (factorio)

Thank you (27" GIGABYTE AORUS CV27Q)

Does it flash blue-ish by chance?

its blur-sharp flickering

you stay - picture is sharp and everything is ok
you move - picture is blur, because you are moving but Windows HDR want every frame sharp so there is blinking, flickering really fast
you stop - picture goes sharp again and everything is ok

pain is,when you are in spider, because spider is not staying solid (fixed to ground).Spider doing many smooth moves

Here's an idea. What if you just turn HDR off before you start factorio and then turn it back on after you close factorio? It does not takes like 5 seconds to do that and it is pretty much the only solution for this. Also factorio does not support 144hz. 60hz max. There are mods that kind of make it possible but they are janky at best and horrible at worst. My advise is to just turn off HDR and change the monitor to 60hz while playing factorio. You do not gain anything by having HDR as factorio has no support for it or 144hz since all the animations are 60fps anyway. Just save yourself the headache.

Okay, disabling HDR, no problem. But for refresh rate, instructing people to just "turn it down only for playing 1 game" is completely pointless. Factorio automatically downscales the FPS to match the UPS so there's no point in manually changing your monitor settings. I have a 240hz monitor and have no issues with playing Factorio. There's also no issues with visual quality (example screen tearing) either. Or at least i haven't had any issues.

@OP disabling it is the only option. I have yet to test the game with it off as it was around 2am when i posted last. Kinda sucks, but it is what it is... :peeperfish:

240hz is fine since it is 4x60hz so it will just display the same image 4 times most of the time. But 144hz is different. It will display the same image 2 times most of the time but it will also semi regularly display it 3 times. That is a whopping 50% longer for some images. That kind of jerkiness can cause some people headaches or even make them feel physically ill. And turning down your refresh rate for the duration of playing factorio does not take much time to do. I mean seriously it does not take much effort to adjust your monitor to fit different games. I'm not telling you to not use high refresh rates for games that support them. What I'm saying is that spending 5 seconds to turn down the refresh rate before playing factorio and then 5 seconds to turn it up after is much better than suffering from all the potential issues the higher refresh rate has with the game.

And since "27" GIGABYTE AORUS CV27Q" is a VA panel, using a lower refresh rate will help with ghosting issues. In most games they are not really noticeable with high end VA panels. But in factorio because of the ground textures when you move the camera at certain speeds the ghosting can become very noticeable and annoying. Infact I would not be surprised if part of the issue op has was because of this ghosting issue.

bingo! 144hz is fine for movies @ 24 FPS (6x). 60 FPS no so much.

1.I tried disable HDR off (dektop 144Hz) - still same (strange,no solution)
2.I tried disable HDR off and dektop 60Hz - its much better, flickering is there only when I stop so not when I am moving

Ok,but this is the only game where I see that problem. So everytime enable/disable HDR and everytime change frequency 60/144Hz is funny :pcbs_gpu:

Maybe its issue of this AORUS monitor, because I had Samsung QLED before with HDR and there was no problem.Maybe its new standard Freesync 2 which I have disable (Nvidia)

So I made this thread to developer to know that there is a problem. This is age of new monitors with new standards and new features (like HDR)

This pretty much confirms that it is the monitor at fault. This is a common problem with monitors that use VA panels. All tough they claim to have high refresh rates and response times that only applies from gray to white to gray. When there is a texture with lots of alternating bright pixels and dark pixels and the texture moves the ghosting issue becomes really apparent. Most of the time it results in the image being darker but some monitors can have other effects.

You can try 120hz mode if the monitor supports it since that is an even 2x60hz. It might work fine or it might not. No way to know without trying it.

The sad truth is that $500 is cheap for a 27" HDR curved high refresh rate monitor and you get what you pay for. At below $1000 you basically have to choose two out of the three. Accurate colors. No ghosting. High refresh rate. Don't get me wrong it's a great monitor and I wish I had the money to buy one. For it's price it seems like a decent one but it's important to realize it's not perfect. For that you need to pay a lot more.

yea,you are right.I played Graveyard Keeper and this problem is there also.Looks like its issue of this monitor with 2D games when you move main character.

C&C remaster strategy works fine
Rimworld also great 144Hz smooth as hell

Maybe its freesync issue there with Nvidia (when I enable Freesync, there is big flashing with freezing)

Thanks a lot

I found problem, its NVIDIA new driver 471.96 fault

When I unistall driver in device manager,Windows automatically find my RTX 3070 and install old 457.51 driver and flickering is gone!

indeed! thanks for reporting back.

yea,I also tried new driver 471.96,but there was a problem with HDR (sometimes flashing, maybe freesync 2 incompatibility)

btw it was issue of the monitor "27" GIGABYTE AORUS CV27Q".Its really sharp (super resolution function) and really fast monitor for games like Splitgate but not good monitor for 2D games like Factorio because it cause flashing when moving.

--------------------------

Today I have new 27 Samsung Odyssey G5 and Factorio and Graveyard Keeper is back to normal good, but fast games like Splitgate sucks and HDR also sucks.

This is my feedback to you so every monitor is good for something else.

Bye :steamsunny:

Funny enough I just went through that myself via research rather than buying. TN visually doesnt bother me so im keeping my TN monitor until Oled monitors or something become a thing.

I thought about 27" AOC AG273QCG,its TN monitor with G-sync,but its 600e monitor with TN technology so I choose 1000R Samsung VA panel.
