Um, I haven't used a storage (yellow) chest in a while, but maybe you can specify that only specific items will ever be stored in that chest. This may also prioritize that chest as storage from bots before other empty ones as well.

This means if you set one down and filter for only iron ore, then deconstruct - for example - a smelter setup, then the ore will go into this yellow chest and you must have another unfiltered one for the belts, furnaces, inserters, coal, etc.

ya, i tried setting it and playing around with it a bit, from what i can tell its a NOT allowed filter.

But it ONLY! seems to let you pick 1 type of thing at max, so it doesnt seem that useful as a blocking filter.

only 1 choice would make more sense as a only go here.

But i know its not only, cause when i turned it on, the bots comming with that item, turned around to go somewhere else.

You got it backwards. It is a whitelist filter. The reason bots turned around is because you changed the setting so the chest was not a valid target for the items for a tick and the bots had to find another chest to put the stuff in.

When bots deconstruct anything, or pick things up off the ground etc, or if you use active providers, they'll put those items into yellow chests.

If you set a filter on the yellow chests, they will basically prioritise those filtered items to that specific chest, or chests.

i.e. filter a chest for fast inserters, and then deconstruct anything with fast inserters, and the bots will try to put them in the filtered chest first.

Note that this isn't 100%, if all storage (yellow) chests are full, bots will start to use any empty space in any other yellow chests, ignoring the filter. So always make sure there are a few unfiltered ones around as well.

Can be handy for things like producing items that later get recycled. For example yellow belts, all your early belts will be yellow ones, and then when you upgrade them to red later on, you'll have lots of spare yellow belts, and these are also used as an ingredient for red belts. So would be handy if you can automatically use those yellow belts, in producing new red belts, rather than building new yellow belts (unless you needed to).

So where you make your yellow and red belts, drop a storage (yellow) chest in between the assemblers making the yellow and red belts, with an inserter between them.

e.g. Yellow belt assembler -(inserter A)-> yellow chest -(inserter B)-> red belt assembler

Attach a green or red wire between inserter A and the chest, and set a condition like 'yellow belts < 100'. And then set a filter on the yellow chest for the yellow belts. This way you'll produce just the 100 belts you want, buy there is still space in the chest for any other yellow belts you deconstruct or replace elsewhere.

Then as you deconstruct anything, or use the upgrade planner to upgrade yellow belts. all the spare yellow belts will be taken by the bots back to this storage chest, thus meaning they can be used to produce red belts. You'd only need to produce more yellow belts as stock ran low, and this would be automatic.

You can do a similar thing with requestor (blue) chests, to request the yellow belts, but this gets more complex, as you'd still need a storage or provider chest as well, as bots cannot pick up items from a blue chest (they can only deliver to a blue chest). So you end up with two chests. Using a storage (yellow) chest with a filter gets round that issue.
