boost your FPS while zoomed out [0.16.*]
[edit] Wube has patched FPS issues with decoratives in 0.16.3 :steamhappy:
  • Fixed very low performance of drawing decoratives on medium or lower video memory usage setting.
[/edit]

*note* make a backup of your config.ini file in case it messes up for some reason.

i was getting 20FPS when zoomed out with 'decoratives' on. turning them off fixed it. howerver, decoratives add so much to the look of the game. i thought "there must be something else i can do."

so i did some tweak testing. i noticed 'Video memory useage' in the graphics setting was on medium. i set it to high and restarted Factorio. BOOM! 60 FPS while fully zoomed out on my Intel HD 3000 potato @ 1440x1080 with decoratives enabled. normal sprite resolution.

just thought i would share.
let us know if it helps you. post your hardware specs.

cheers

Steam was the biggest FPS killer for me which is why I have it off. I have not noticed any FPS drops other than on some of my biggest bases when I have thousnads of robots flying about. I5-2500k @4300mhz, gtx 970, 16gb ram @1600mhz. PS: My CPU is from late 2011.

yeah, if i'm playing the steam version (instead of package) i have steam overlay off for factorio.
also set the afinity for all the steam crap (steamhelper x5) to core 0, the rest for Factorio.

I'm sure hestekraft was talking about the steam/smoke that comes out of buildings, not Steam the online service :)
impetus_maximus 14 DIC 2017 a las 5:48 a. m.
oh, smoke. you are probably right.

"normal sprite resolution."
Not the new, high-res sprites? I only get FPS issues with high res sprites.

Thanks for the tips... I had similar fps issues with the new hi-res graphics.

Thanks for pointing out this performance issue. Performance of drawing decoratives on low/medium video memory usage. But if the game runs fine on high there is no reason to go back to medium.

i'm using integrated potato graphics, so high-res is not an option for me.
i don't really feel the need for the high def stuff. game is beautiful on normal.

you are welcome. :)
again if this helps, please discribe your settings/hardware so we can help others get the most out of Factorio's graphics.

CPU: Intel i5-3750k @3.40GHz - OC'ed to 3.80GHz
GPU: Nvidia GTX 660 Ti
RAM: 2x 4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 @1600MHz
OS: Windows 7 64bit

I have latest beta for 0.16 and all settings at max/high with Memory usage set to All.

It seems with the latest update I get a constant "stutter". When I start a new map and start setting up/mining I'll consistently dip from 60 FPS to 54 FPS every ~7 seconds. Doesn't really seem to matter what I'm actively doing. However if I idle instead of moving/mining the interval goes from ~7 to ~10 seconds. When I got to setting up Electric Drills the FPS dips to 50 instead of 54.

Haven't really gotten to my usual factory size yet but I have about ~60 Drills going with ~50 Assemblers pumping out stuff to my belts.

So yeah, I'm sure a normal person wouldn't mind the ~10 FPS dips every few seconds. Though for me it starts to get irritating after ~30 minutes of playing, I think it's a holdover from my StarCraft league days... little voice keeps screaming "OMG FIX IT! Too Much Stutter!11!!" lol.

Don't know how I could fix it without reducing the game settings. Maybe getting more RAM or a higher refresh monitor? I'm sitting at 60Hz for my current monitor.

thanks for the stats.
2GB of VRAM is not enough for high rez sprites.

Man seriously? I even have 4GB for shared Memory too...

Lame.

Guess I'll need to learn to tolerate the FPS stutter until I get a new GPU. High Res everything is too pretty to pass up lol.

the more high rez stuff that is added, the more VRAM you will need.

I changed a few settings and now it runs smoothly -- for me -- zoomed out, large window, with high-res sprites on.

I think the important setting was for "Atlas Texture size" -- I changed it to 4046 from it's previous value of "largest possible."

I also changed "Video memory usage" to High instead of All.

I turned on "Wait for vsync" but I don't think that is what helped the issue.

(I also have smoke, clouds, and inserter shadows off, and decoratives and item shadows on. )

But now it's running great!

Oh man I could hug you!

Changing my settings to mimic yours has me only dipping 2 Frames now; which is nothing. For some reason I didn't think to try multiple setting differences at once. I had only been only changing one thing at a time and reverting it when it didn't make a noticeable difference.

if you're a chick, then hug on. if not *fist bump lol
you are welcome.
