Over time biters become more of a nuisance than a threat, disabling expansion somewhat limits that nuisance factor.
Lowering the evolution setting can help too.
Some players prefer disabling expansion, but to me that feels a bit lame.
And yes, that's amatter of opinion.
Research artillery, destroy all biter spawns from the comfort of your base.
The biters are rubbish and you have gun, laser and fire turrets, you have piercing and uranium ammo, nuclear missiles and tanks. After the first 20 mins of a new game the biters are no match for you.
Having more forests helps, too - it stops the pollution cloud from spreading too far.
With that you should be able to have a relaxed game with otherwise standard biter settings.
Another option you could chose is that biters don't expand. If this is activated you can do a more active defense - just destroy all nests which are inside or close to your pollution cloud and you don't need to fear any attacks. Without that setting you need to have a wall protected with turrets all around your base even if you wipe out the biter nests, as biters might expand right into your area without you seeing that.
This gives you enough time to develop defenses as the nests are outside your pollution cloud for quite some time.
Check map preview to see how far away they would be and maybe reroll if it's a desert environment as trees can soak up a lot of pollution - you want to have forests.
A good rule of thumb is that you should upgrade your defenses if they get damaged.
I think i leave expansion on, i will give that a try, but give me a very well sized starting area,... and forests :)
Thank you very much for the fast response!
Disabling biter expansion, or lowering evolution, or anything else that nerfs them makes a huge part of the game trivial.
