I brought from the Factorio site and i'm unable to play with my friend who brought it on steam, every time i try to connect to them it's say that I cannot establish a connection to the server. Does the game have separated server for Steam version and retail version?

probably if so why keep 2 seperated servers and not one giant server? i'm sure it's less taxing to combine both servers to one bigger server so all servers can work together

No there is crossplay between all versions and platforms.
Did you try if your friend can join if you host a game?
Can you join other public servers?

Had the same problem. I just portforwarded my router and that fixed it. I'm not exactly tech savvy so there could be a problem entirely somewhere else but this is what worked for me.

There are plenty of guides on the internet. Wait for more people to reply so you don't do something unnecessary just because it worked for me.

In principle portforwarding shouldn't be necessary because the game does NAT punching.
In my case for example it works fine without but there can probably be network constellations in which this doesn't work so it might be worth a try.

How you do it varies between the different routers. You can look it up in the router manual.

But in general you need to go to your routers webinterface and set up a forwarding of port 34197 (UDP) to the local IP of your computer.

No. There is only a single lobby server managed by wube. All game servers are hosted by players and the host needs to have port forwarding either manually or automatically by the router with NAT punching for it to be reachable from the server browser. However if a player who has steam version checks steam join when hosting then other players who have the game on steam can use steam servers as a proxy to connect without a need for portforwarding by using the join game button on steam friends interface.

If you have bought the game from the factorio site you should have also recieved a steam key. If you didn't then connect support@factorio.com and they should sort it out. This will make it easier to playe with friends.
