How to protect trains?
Resources around my factory is depleded, and I need to build estractors far from base, and transport resources by train.
But the railway is too long to be protected, and swarms block and destroy my trais (how a green worm can istantly a train traveling at 272Km/h?)
I tried "vehicle grid" mod and filled locomotive and wagons with shield and laser defenses, but it's not enough.
Any advice? No way to protect trains with vanilla game?

I like to plop a ring of turrets on any cleared bases so they can't rebuild on that spot without a lot of work.
The trains aren't a target for biters unless you're riding the train so if you put something they don't like, like say a laser turret, near the tracks, the biters will attack the turret instead of waiting on the tracks and getting angry when a train hits them.

How a big bug can stop a full speed train is still a mystery though.

As you can see in my screenshot, my outpost are sourrounded by biter bases:

Just make sure, that trains doesnt stop. Otherwise they can block bitermovement. This is the only reason biters will attack trains. Trains are normaly neutral entieties unlike player or robots.

I would NOT recomment mods adding turrets on your trains, that make them a targed.

PS: Diddnt lost anytrain in last 100h of vanilla.

I found a rich resource zone far from main base, and built a second "stand alone" base there.
But in the long railway my train hit often a creature and aggro many of them on the rails, and when it come back, they will stop him.
I realized that protect train with personal laser will easily take care of few creature, but it will aggro much more of them in the rails on the way back.
I already protected first part of railway with turrets, but protect all the track is an hard (and expensive) job.

Normal train dont aggro biters. And this space is actually so huge, pollution should reach most part of the railway.

Why did you go so far away? You passed a lot of patches to get to that one.

Were you only interested in ore patches that are very rich?

I would recommend gathering the ore closer to your main base first, and wall off the entire area. Yeah, you will use thousands and thousands of walls, and thousands of laser turrets, too. But then your entire rail system is "in your base".

Don't ignore the low hanging fruit.

You REALLY shouldn't be having trains be attacked by biters. The only reason I can think of the train stopping, or them being completely blocked- which shouldn't happen. You should only need defenses at the outpost itself.

You have a very rich water zone around you. Instead of defending your rails, conquer that space by building laser turrets and walls between lakes. There are also a lot of ore patches to be conquered this way. Trust me. It's the safest way to expand and you will need that space anyway, because your main base it's not small but neither big.

what are u up to ? you should habe enough resources to launch rocket already b4 you run out resources, and if you arent planning to just win the game but going to make huge mega base, you should clear up a large area b4 you drain your resources.

my 2 cents.

A Train is never the source of the attack!
A Biter will attack the train if:
- It kills stuff by Driving over it
- Standing still near a Biter
- Driving thru Tower Range of a Worm (they attack everythung even Drones)
- The Player riding the Vehicle (The Player has a high aggro Range)

You wont have to protect all of the Tracks. Clear a good amount arround the Tracks (Bases will spawn close but not in Tower Range).
Defend everything generating Polution (that triggers attacks)

Just clear out bases closer to your train tracks and place a ton of turrets at the farthest point out that the train stops. Turrets will aggro the biters.

I've never had any issues with my trains being attacked in vanilla or even heavily modded.

Are you using mods that affect biter behavior?
Lambas Sep 19, 2017 @ 11:20am
If your frontier train is long enough, no amount of biters will be able to stop it.
Sheer bulk is one of your options, but admittedly this tactic is complicated by the corresponding need for very large train stations equipped with enough repair bots to bang out the dings.

If you don't mind mods, then Bob's mod has armoured trains.

the best thing to do would be to use the multi layer track system way you can layer tracks to stop them being destroyed when the first ones destroyed the biters wont attack again i forgot how to do it so search it up

Track redundancy? I like that idea!
