Can you play Factorio with a Xbox 360 controller?
I was playing some games with my controller when I thought, "What if I could play Factorio with a controller?" So, being the lazy person I am, decided not to plug it in and see, but to take it to the discussions. So, can it be played with a controller?

Not a good idea. This game with a controller must be a nightmare to play.

This is a game where you need to be precise. Good luck attaching circuit network cables to your stuff.

There is no way you can play this game with a controller effectively.
IDK, just wondering. No need to be harsh. I thought you could use the L stick to move around, R stick to move a mouse pointer of sorts.

Oh, btw, I just recorded your original reply for everyone to see.

My first answer was better anyway. So thx.

I have to team up with Samael here; A controller is horrible imprecise, I think it would be a nightmare using one in this game.

I wonder why someone would want to play without a mouse unless it's to use a steam link.

Starcraft 64 was a version of Starcraft released for play with the Nintendo 64.

There was a console version of Simcity too, and Cities: Skylines is about to release on Xbox 1.

There are lots of examples of "point and click"games being ported to consoles. It's not optimal, sure, but some people are REALLY good with controllers. I still can't figure out how people are such good snipers in console online shooters, it takes me forever to aim...

At any rate, as far as I know, there is not controller support for this game. It might be possible to use a controller by mapping the buttons to keyboard controls, but I'm not sure you can make the stick control the mouse curser.

It helps that consoles have aim assist, but done properly you can use two separate levels of movement to move the crosshair around. the right stick for large movements, and the small stick for tiny precise aim adjustments. As well, some people are able to time firing a gun well enough that they hit something as they spin the controller past the target.

I prefer mice and keyboards.

If I had to play Factorio on a console, I'd want to do so on the WiiU since the secondary screen on the gamepad could be used as a faux-mouse.

Keybinds are the real issue, unless you put in a system to manage button combinations to serve as keybinds.

What I was thinking was you moved the player with the left stick and you would move a pointer of sorts with the right stick. It could work on the Nintendo Switch, it just would be easier to play using handheld mode.
Some games are not meant to be played with a controller and vice versa. Factorio is definately one of those that needs a mouse. Maybe with proper mods (if they exist) it would be doable but personally I would hate it to play this game with a controller.

But it would require a lot more work than just using 1 stick for movement and 1 for the pointer. You would need all sorts of smart-inventory stuff and smart-targetting and such. And then you still need a keyboard for naming stuff like stations... And you will miss out on a lot of shortcut keys.

True...

I dunno... 360 controllers have a lot of keys. Inventory, trains, production, "click", "shift-click", ... I think there'd be enough buttons.

But for sure, trying to move the cursor, especially in a panic fight, will just get you killed.

You'd probably have to rework the toolbelt UI to work like the Mana Series ring menu.
