Is there any point to radars after they scanned max range?
Do radars do anything after they scanned the maximum range around them (224x224)? Well okay they give visibility through the map view but I dont care about that.

Is there a way to see when they finished scanning the max range around them?

There is not. However, it is very important to have live coverage of, at least, your base and assembly areas. The map view makes it trivial to instantly check on production issues, turret ammo levels, biter attacks, etc, from anywhere in the game world.

I'll have hundreds of radars covering a good sized base for this reason alone.

EDIT

In fact, i'd argue the live view is more important than its slow scanning range.

Yes you can view your base by zooming in on the map view which is very handy.

The live view does not cause performance issues for mega bases right? It only affects it when you actually zoom in on it right?

As far as I know this is correct. However, I have a beefy computer so ymmv.

I find map view VERY handy indeed. You can build things remotely, order your trains to bring you unusual items, it's absolutely fantastic! IMO the BEST feature of 0.15.

+1 KoS, map view is great: I use it all the time for copy-pasting trains / stations / inserters / assemblers, sometimes entire factory sections. All without moving the player char. So lazy...

The live view gives pretty much the same UPS as going there in person at the same zoom level.

You see enemies moving as red dots on the minimap (weird how no one mentioned this yet).

I never used to use Radars before 0.15 - but now with the map view (and you can place blueprints from EVERYWHERE as well as remote controll all trains in range), 100% radar coverage on my base structure is a must now. - would also make for a nice challenge factory...rush robots and never move again
Oh controlling trains through remote view? I didn't know that one yet. That sounds nice. I think I'm gonna make myself a blueprint for a standalone radar then (100% solar energy)

Don't get me wrong. By remote control i meant that you setup stations and just click on the train from everywhere and order it to go to the station (trust me that this is very very handy on giga factories )

Aside from the live view that everyone here loves (me included, It is a must-have at every train station in my base), when a radar re-scans an area it will update what it found when it turns dark again. This can let you see where biters expand to, even if very slowly.

You may need to start a new map with a higher resolution

All of the light colored parts of the map are the live views of radars.
