I'll have hundreds of radars covering a good sized base for this reason alone.

In fact, i'd argue the live view is more important than its slow scanning range.
As far as I know this is correct. However, I have a beefy computer so ymmv.
The live view gives pretty much the same UPS as going there in person at the same zoom level.
Don't get me wrong. By remote control i meant that you setup stations and just click on the train from everywhere and order it to go to the station (trust me that this is very very handy on giga factories )

this view of map, I do not see any radars hanging around there
All of the light colored parts of the map are the live views of radars.
