how to actually use the cheats?
where would one paste them or whatever, how it works specifically?

i wasn't going to get the game before i learned about the cheats. now that i realize it has cheats i am fully willing to buy it. i got little time as i work alot in real life and so on, but would love to play a game like this without hte grind aspect to it.

You press a key to open the console (I think it's tilde by default), then write (or paste) the cheat code in. This will, of course, disable achievements. The first time you enter a cheat, the game will warn you about the achievements and tell you to repeat the command. Just press the up arrow and press enter to confirm. This confirmation is needed only for the first cheat in a save.

There are also a lot of mods to ease up the grinding parts, for various definitions of grinding.

Mods can be found at mods.factorio.com
Here are a few mods that commonly used. These aren't too cheaty so as to no spoil enjoyment of the game. I believe you can still get local achievements when using these, but not Steam achievements.
Skip first hour (eliminates first hour grind)
Long reach (allows interacting with items on the screen without having to walk within a few feet)
Squeek Through (allows you to easily walk through forests, pipes and other tight spots)
Upgrade Builder and Planner (not cheaty, but takes tedium out of upgrading things)
Afraid of the dark (more light at night)
FARL (fully automated rail layer)
Fun vehicle mods like Aircraft or Helicopters

There are a number of cheaty console commands, but I am not so familar with them. You can google factorio console commands to find common ones. Remember that any time you use a console command starting with /c that it will disable achievements for that game.
You can do things like instantly research all tech, kill all enemys, craft any item, eternal daytime, teleport player, change enemy evolution factor and more.

I would add Nanobots: Early Bots to that list, helps with building and tearing down allready built things.

little things like this bother me: played demo, had a machine built producing something, then the game asks me to place box item at the drop location of the machine but it was yellow'd out and wouldn't let me put the place the box at that location. is the solution to tear down the machine and replace it in a different spot so i can place the box at the drop location of the machine?

as such couldn't progress through tutorial until i did that little thing. also i had no real description as to why that box is needed there? i was doing fine picking it up. what is even the purpose of that box?
The main portion of the game is the Freeplay. You can turn biters of entirely to learn the game and turn them back on for a new playthrough if you feel confident enough.
Edit: I wouldn't waste my time on the tutorial, since its getting reworked for 0.17

Because standing there to pick up the items as they are crafted in the assembler or drop out of a miner is a bit, um, inefficient. Only one item can be dropped on the ground in front of a miner, and assemblers will stop accepting new input items once they have a few items in their output slot. If you put a box or a belt there, miner can keep mining without you standing there for hours.

Not sure what you mean here. What was yellowed out? Screenshot?

Also, you can rotate machines (press R when hovering). Open the options menu and look at the controls to see what you can do.

I really recommend watching gameplay videos on You Tube. Many are to be found from different creators. I love Catherine of Sky, Factorio's queen. She uploaded several tutorial gameplay's which really helped me forward.

okay makes sense now. but why couldn't i place the box where it asked me? because that location was covering the rocks i was mining, meaning the machine has to be on the edge of the stuuff i'm mining? or is rotating it the main reason?

There's 2 kinds of stone. The big stones that you can't physically walk through cannot be mined with any machine. Use pickaxe for them. The stones that you can mine are same sort of mineral fields as iron, copper and coal.

For the miner, you can't place it on yourself. Otherwise the 5x5 area of a miner has to touch at least 1 ore tile.

i had my machine on the mining rocks, and no other physical obstructions near by, it wouldn't let me place box at the drop location. was that because the drop location was on the minable rocks? or did i have to rotate the machine? or place it near the edge of the mineable rocks?

No, no, and no. You can place anything on an ore field. The larger rocks, that you can't place buildings on, also block movement, so if you can't move through a location, you can't build on it either. You can remove large rocks by mining them, takes only a second or two.

If it's not a large rock, a tree, water, another building, or you standing in that location, I don't know what it would be. If you encounter it again, please post a screenshot, that should help us find the problem.
