Personally, I like to connect the lakes with walls, and have large tracts of land that are defended with lasers, repaired by independent bot networks.
If you don't want to surround your base with walls, you can wall-in each outpost, but be prepared to repair power poles frequently. I would suggest using the tanker cars instead of piping because of the destruction annoyance. (0.15.x has tanker cars in the vanilla game).
Normally they ignore trees and power poles and pipes and stuff in the logistics catagory.
If anything is blocking their path, they will attack it.
They aim for things that produce pollution but will attack military buildings and players first.
