The most basic advice is that you can zoom out to see fairly far, the map and mini-map also display trains, so as long as you do the equivalent of looking left and right before crossing you should be safe.
I don't know if you want a working solution or just hints so I'll start with hints.
Signals can detect trains (they change colour depending on if a train is in that block).
Even on 1-way rails you can still put a signal on the other side as long as it is paired with a signal on the right side, to detect trains in the block "before" more easily.
All signals can send their signals to a circuit network, standard signals can also be forcefully turned red with it.
Gates can detact both players and trains depending on where they are placed.
They can send that information to a circuit network or be forcefully opened or closed with it.
Light can be controlled through circuit network to display various colours regardless of the time of day, making it fairly easy to have a green/red light along places you are likely to be crossing.
Programmable speakers can be used with circuit network to emit a sound near them (similar to your "horn").
With all of those informations, all it requires is a basic understanding of circuit network to make multiple very different things to solve your issue, from making a sound when a train is coming to stopping trains if you are near a specific portion of the rail that you made for safe crossing (you can also do the reverse and block yourself when a train is coming if you prefer that since it mirrors real life better and can make it easier to get used to).
I personally would like it block me. As im working on walling in my tracks "ya i get run over a lot to lol" to keep me from getting hit. Sound warnings dont work as i dont use sound. Light isnt very effective since lot of time i run game at higher speeds lol By time it lights.. bam!!! im dead lol
I havent tried yet.. But can you connect gates to logistics? You seem to imply can? Could you explain Fel? I can start new tread if prefer.
I will add you :-) lol after all the years ive known you on factorio im wondering why i didnt do it earlier with all the answers you given me lol
I did find a guide. Not sure why couldnt find it before.. lol
That is going to be difficult because you will need combinator logic to determine if the player is standing on the tracks (in which case locking the gate would kill the player), or moving towards the track (in which case not locking the gate would kill the player).
Sit back.
Listen as (essentially) trains blare a horn constantly as they move around my base.
Laugh.
It works easy for me now. Fel helped me out. In end all i need do is use 2 signal sensors "only need wire one of them lol" and connect first sensor to gates and done. Now when train coming gates close so i dont walk across tracks.
I dont use a combinator or math or any other unit. Literally 2 signal sensors all i need.
On many aspects it is much simpler to stop the trains when detecting a nearby player than to warn or stop the player.
