Mining is absurd.

I'm currently using the update that removed pickaxes from the game, and as a result, am mining by had so absurdly slow that it takes me 10 minutes to pick up a single building with a 100% boost to mining speed. Is there a way to go back to a version of the game that has mining tools? Will switching those versions break my mods?

well depend on mod.

usually in mod where you research steel pickaxe will improve mining by hand.

Right-click the game in your Steam library, click on Properties. Under the Betas tab, you can select which version of the game you would like to run. You can play as far back as v0.12 if you would like.

Or, alternatively, you could update your mods (if available)? Anything updated recently shouldn't have any problems with not having the craftable pickaxe, since that was taken out awhile ago.

0.17 I believe. I don't remember if it was with the first update or somewhere in the middle

Either you are just exaggerating a lot or you are mining things wrong. You are not by chance clicking a bunch to mine stuff, you are HOLDING the mining button down right?

Also, the update removing pickaxes didn't change mining speeds as far as I know. It just made it so you don't have to craft the picks - your mining speed should be the same. And I think there should be an early game tech still that upgrades to the steel pickaxe, which gives you the mining speed of using a steel pickaxe, only you don't have to craft them anymore.

The first reply had the correct answer. Your mod will have a new way to mine faster, without the pickaxe. You don't need a pickaxe.

The only reason to downgrade the game over pickaxes is if you like roleplaying that you're holding a pickaxe. There are people on Wube's official forums who claim there was a deep artistic significance to the pickaxe, and removing it ruins the game, but I think they are trolls.

I just double checked, and that is exactly how the base game works. No pickaxes, but you mine as fast as you do with a pickaxe, and there is a steel pickaxe upgrade that will make you mine as fast as you did with the old steel pickaxes.

So yeah, downgrading the game over pickaxes is not going to do anything. Other than make you pay resources for the same mining speed you get with the latest version. Unless they tweaked the mining speed too, but I kind of doubt it. It certainly wouldn't be nearly as noticeable as OP makes it sound though. Which is why I'm wondering if he is mining by right-clicking once for every swing or something. Instead of holding it down.

Tell the mod author that they screwed up and hope that they fix things (e.g. Space Exploration sets mining speed to 0 when in satellite mode to prevent players from picking up buildings from orbit, which completely breaks sandbox mode).

I think by mining he means picking up structures and vehicles - counts as "mining". So some mod that slows down mining also slows down this mechanic.
