One can be easier to make transfer lanes. One uses less total footprint, one has more room for things such as lasers or stations or solar panels.
Depending how you are designing/using your intersections, one could be better.
In my opinion, i would go with the system that uses more space, because i like to make my bases bigger and bigger, so the extra space would reserve the ability to grow.
However i have found that properly thought out intersections provide much more benefit than simply more lanes.
You can also fit a lot of solar panels so it's not like the space is wasted.
