As for how many macgines you need it depends on the machine.
For example an assembling machine 1 have a crafting speed of 0.5, meaning that it doubles the crafting time you see on the recipe.
You divide the machine's crafting speed of the machine by the time you see on the recipe to know how many crafting cycles you have per machine.
You need to multiply that with the number of items the recipe produces to obtain your real production per second per machine.
You then divide the belt's throughput by that number to know how many machines are needed to fill a belt (either use a lane's worth of throughput or both lanes depending on what you in what you intend).
For example, iron or copper plates with stone furnace takes 3.2 seconds per plate, stone furnace has a crafting speed of 1 and yellow belts have a throughput of 15 items per second (7.5 per lane).
1 / 3.2 = 0.3125 crafting cycle per second
0.3125 * 1 = 0.3125 items per second
7.5 / 0.3125 = 24 machines per lane (or 48 machines per belt)
This is only if the belts is constantly moving, meaning that the items are consumed at the maximum rate as well, but that's how you figure out how many machines you need to fill a belt or a lane.

And as muschko-alfons said a mod:

But those are more geared towards calculating a whole chain than how to fill a belt.
Maybe it was this but i think they said planar or something. Maybe they miscommunicated the idea or they were telling me a bunch of ♥♥♥♥ when i was new. Didn't really get the ideas all organized.
