You do know you need an enemy target for pistol and SMG?... shotgun can shoot anywhere with no target..
Your mouse needs to be near an alien or base to shoot SMG or pistol
Using the auto-target key yes, using the default C key allows you to shoot at any high lighted target.
Edit: I don't use the shotgun much myself, but if I remember correctly, it has a larger range than the pistol and smg. So maybe one could switch to the other weapons thinking they are in range when they actually are not.
And yes, the pistol/smg do need a target, unlike the shotgun. But your own building targets will work, as long as you are in range. Hence my suggestion to try your binds on a wooden box.
I'm very grateful that they aren't. I often find myself fighting against the swarm in heavily wooded areas.
There's three, aren't there?
Nope. Just checked. One for the tool, a slot under that for armour, and three slots each for weapons and their respective ammunition.
