Do the steam engines slow down and use less steam when you use less power than their maximum?
Same question about boilers,if steam engines do slow down,do the boilers also slow down and use less coal?

Yes. Steam engines consume resources at a slower pace if not using all the power they produce. They consume fuel at the rate of energy required.

Yeah, the game is logical in that sense in all aspects

steam engines will speed up when more of a load is put on them using more steam. like a governor on an engine.

boilers will burn more fuel when producing more steam. yes boilers will use less coal when producing less.

my wood stove has a mechanical (no electricity) thermostat on it. when it gets colder, it lets more air in to burn the fire hotter. it makes sense the boilers are doing something similar.

so i won't increase the pollution if i make 2x as many boilers than i need?

no, it should be the same if output is equal.

2x steam engines(along with a boiler) will increase you power capacity, meany you are capable of producing 2x power and 2x polution, but you will only produce more polution once you are requiring more power.

You can click on any power pole to see a graph of your power grid

Note that this is unlike nuclear. Nuclear reactors consume nuclear fuel at a constant rate regardless of the power consumption. So in order to fully utilize nuclear fuel, your power requirements should already be pretty high.

Or you can use a few red/green wires & a steam measuring tank to convert it into a fuel-efficient "pulse" reactor.

strange that trains don't need steam and can run with coal only :D very logical, not :D
impetus_maximus Feb 7, 2019 @ 4:52am
piston operated engines can run on coal, wood, etc. so yes it's logical.

I think his comment is related to the hover tooltip of a locomotive (at least at some point, dunno if current) contained the word steam.

However i have a work around for that since the train stations have an overhang portion which contains a water refill line, supplied by a well.
Bread Feb 7, 2019 @ 8:56am
the trains thing is crazy cuz they can run on coal, solid fuel, rocket fuel and nuclear fuel cells, yet they cant eat oil even if they kinda look like diesel engines.
