Finally it happenend...and i am sad
No way i was thinking about this game would break because of updates. But the 0.18 sound update is just aweful. Im very sorry to say to the resposible dev how created the new sounds but boy oh boy....what a bad job.
The new footsteps for example...the "boot" sound on some surfaces are so "sloppy" and way too loud. A burner mining drill with a furnace..cant tell what i hear but its quiet...it lacks expression
The new axe sound...the high "pling" sound....jezus...
Whenever i start a new game in 0.18 i stop as soon as i have started as i cant get myself over the aweful sounds.
I prefer sound above graphics but these soundsamples are very poor quality.
Also the sound distance...i need to stand directly next to a steam engine to hear its sound..

The new sound lack expression. It should be heavy duty but still crisp. The sounds do NOT match with what i expect to hear. Shutting down and removing Factorio....for the first time in thousand hours...

O_o This is a worrying report to see posted ~ as I have had to turn the volume down quite low ingame to avoid repetative noises triggering / worsening migraine.
Walking / mining are especially bad, and the "boop-boop" SFX for pending construction queue annoyed me so much that I had to replace the file with 1sec of silence back in v0.14 (the new "alerts" console commands make that much easier now).

Gonna have to try the 0.18 beta soon, & see if is the same for me as you describe in OP...

0.18.2 patchnotes list some audio-related fixes, so I'm hoping the devs will sort out any teething troubles with the new sound style.

I have 24/7 migraines and am very sensitive to sound. I have had ZERO issues with sound in my game since I switched to 0.18 when it came out.

OP, maybe try adjusting the individual sound settings for walking, etc. to find a better balance for yourself?

I like most of the new sounds, artillery and rocket are great. Only the entity destroyed sound is a bit strange.
The new footstep sound is in my oppinion a bit loud by default so I turned it a bit down in the options.

I also liked most of the sounds, and that they increased the distance of what you can hear, when you zoom out feels great. Overall I am very happy with the new sounds (rocket, pumpjack, robots...), though I agree that there are some I will have to get used to, and some I don't really get. Entity destroyed is weird, and the squeaking inserters get annoying, when there are a lot of them around you.

Thanks for the report from a fellow sufferer ~ has helped to ease my concerns.

On a related note, if you also suffer light sensitivity, in regard to the new contrast / alpha / gamma adjustment settings that were added: Do they help to reduce the percieved sudden change in screen brightness from the "background dimming" effect? (eg, when opening main menu from ingame. It was also used in the NPE for every message, & I had to stop playing that after only 2-3mins.)

game sounds are .ogg files. prefer the old ones? just swap them out. too loud? lower the volume in audacity.

i change cannot-build.ogg to the engineer's 'nope!', and eat.ogg to heavy's nom nom nom.

Sound files just like textures are moddable as far as i know, if you want to use old ones and also let other people enjoy them. But lets see what happens anyways, these sounds are less than a day old it seems, the first iteration of changes. It would be far too early to start making a mod out of this!

The new sound effects are not great. The older sound effects felt uniform. Now the game sounds like a mess. The sounds no longer gel as there is something off with them.

For example the old Furnace sound sounded Industrial and now it sounds like a camp fire.

Never like people waving off sounds as something that doesnt matter when sounds are probably the most important part of world building in a video game.

Hopefully the dev will reassess how good some of the older sounds were and put them back in.
