Use belts and inserters to send ingredients to assembly machines. The whole point is to set it up so your factory harvests materials, processes them, sends them to be assembled, sends THOSE to be parts of other machines -- all automatically. All you need to do is focus on setting up new production lines so your factory makes new stuff.
It's mostly complex items like the engine and anything requiring fluids or fuel.
Mouse over anything and the game will tell you what that item can be crafted in.
In the engine's case, you need a blue assembler.

Are required for that recipe
In my case, I don't know how to get the recipe for the Assembling Machine 3, which is necessary to craft the engine. I've researched every item (including the fast axe!) and can't find the research recipe for the machine. At this point, all of the bugs are slaughtered and I'm getting close to having mined almost all of the resources on the map; I have automated build pipelines for nearly everything, including the Automation and Science Packs (which I think are the most complex, in terms of chaining increasingly complex items).
I am simply stuck at how to trigger the game to let me research Assembling Machine 3. The Objective is "Build a car"; any ideas about what it wants me to do before it'll give me the research recipe?
If the necro-bump is unwelcome, I'll post an entirely new thread. I'm hoping to get the answer on this page only because other players might find this page the same way I did.
I misunderstood the icons. I thought they meant I needed all three Assembling Machines. In fact, all three *can* make an engine.
Solved.
