Destroying nests good or bad?
I'm currently playing a map on default settings and I'm wondering if I should go out and destroy the nests.

Currently the natives are not an issue. I have plenty of belt-fed gun turrets around the base keeping them out

I know that destroying nests does increase the evalution rate significantly but I do worry that if I don't I'll be overwhelmed when the larger varieties finally arrive.

Is it better to leave them be, except when they're sitting on a resource I want or should I go extermiate the colonies en mass?

I would recommend keeping an eye on your map, and destroying any nests that are going to be reached by your pollution cloud before too long.

While killing nests does amp up evolution, they will still evolve over time regardless. And every ore patch coverd in aliens is one ore patch you are not useing to reserch better guns and build more bullets.

Personally I would remove all biters and nests. They are fun for a short while but once you're in endgame you're surrounded with so many of em that it's just tedious to deal with.

You can push them way beyond the edges of your pollution at the start of the game and have complete and utter peace for hours. This also means that aside from this initial evo spike they won't evolve anywhere close to your own pace meaning you'll be heavily outgunning them by the time you meet again.

The downside:
No defense action whatsoever for hours worth of playtime. Might as well have disabled enemies in the first place.

How can autoclearing artillery be tedious?

They will cross rail, and soner or later they wil eat electric pole. You need to kill evriting what is after rail looking from pollution sorce.

the short of it, killing nearby nests to your polution cloud will prevent suprises from coming up later and damaging things. so killing nests while it lurches their evolution forward, ultimately its moving forward anyway.

Go Starship Troopers against the nests.

Run those mother ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ over with a train!

Seriously though, the small spike you get from destroying the nest is worth it over them staying in range and pumping up the evolution anyways from your pollution. Generally, clear out a very large area around anything that produces pollution and setup a wall so that they don't expand into that same area. Unless you're looking to actively fight them at all times which doesn't have a reward.
So overall it's agreed that genocide is the way to go?

Killing the natives of a newfound land is always beneficial for the ones doing the killing.

Sadly true.

I was wondering the same. So I decided to wall them off well outside off my pollution cloud. And destroy the nets inside the wall.
I ve built protected rails to where I want to have my outside wall. But I have now the problem that there are huge water patches that its difficult to use blueprints around them...
