How do you supply gun turrets with ammo?
Assuming you use them in your outposts and on the perimeter around your base.

Most importantly:
Do you have a way to conveniently do this without roboports?

I have had several ideas so far but none of them are either possible or satisfying it seems.
1) Circular ammo belt all around the base (along the perimeter) => too much ammo leing about.
2) Space out ammo with circuit network => wonky especially since fully upgraded turrets chew through clips in split seconds. Still too much ammo and belt gets excessively long in late game.
=>
3) Replace belt with rails. Add trainstop as part of turret / defense blueprint. => Couldn't find a way to work with generic train stations. => would have to update train schedule for every turret bank (= possibly houndreds).

Is there a way to set trains to just "visit next station in line" regardless of it's name?

Is there just no effing way to supply those turrets automatically without the aid of bots, or having houndred thousand of rounds running around the map on an houndred mile belt?

Dual headed trains with odd numbers and the waggon in the middle with an ammo filter set for ammo then a simple filter inserter set to the ammo type you want in the middle. Also easy as hell to replace ammo types. Just change filter and pipe the "old" ammo back. Thats how i do the outposts ammo supply unless its an tiny one...

Honestly, my turrets rarely run out of their first batch of ammo that I put in them manually when I first build them. Mainly because they were a temporary defense while I built up enough stuff to go kill the biter nests. Once I have the ability to do so, I ruthlessly exterminate all biter nests within my pollution cloud. So refilling my defensive turrets with ammo isn't really an issue.

I've never seen a turret use enough ammo to run out during an attack, so it's just a case of resupplying as needed.

For reference, a fully upgraded gun turret empties 2.5 mags per second and requires just a bit more than that to destory a behemoth biter (no infinite research). Default buffer size they use when fed by an inserter is 10 I believe, so roughly 4 seconds worth of ammo.

In contrast, if you have a 1000+ tiles long belt (yellow, because why waste the resource?) then resupply might take considerably longer than 4 seconds.
But you also have more than one gun turret. I always have at least 3 turrets in one spot, and increasing them if the biters have created a path through the are guarded by that spot.

By the time behemoth bitters have spawned, you're almost always using laser turrets. The exception is if you're doing a personal challenge, but I'm not, and so have never had to face this myself. I'm currently doing the raining bullets achievement, and 10 gun turrets easily handles the singular most attacked spot on my perimeter, and my evolution is at 0.8 or something.

It shouldn't really be a case of feeding the turrets enough bullets to keep them continuously firing, it should be case of having enough firepower, even if short-lived, to decimate any enemies before they reach your wall. Even though the conveyor belts are slow, the turrets themselves are plentiful enough to provide enough firepower to stop any wave of enemies, and then the conveyor has plenty of time to refill.

(For reference, the enemy base attacking my wall is on the other side of a 20 tile ocean which is next to about 400 electric furnaces.)

Aaand more than one target. But that doesn't matter. Reasonable resupply speed is simply part of the specifications I have in mind.

uranium rounds being 3x the damage of piercing extends their usefulness.

I actually constructed an outpost-station, that requests a special supply train (2 loco +1 cargo) with walls, contructor drones, repair kits, turrets and ammo.
And some basic circuit system for operating station - request train only when it lacks something.

Very useful thing for rail world with bugs.
