im have been enjoying factorio for far to long now but i am stil having some problems with trains.
now i have looked up alot of tutorials now and i have gotten my dubble lane system to work. now i want to switch to a 4 (or more) lane system but sadly the tutorials run out here. does someone have a good link for me?

Can I get some links to these 2 lane systems for myself please? My google fu has been failing me recently.

What about 4 lanes do you need a tutorial for? Pretend it is a two lane system with a wider track and it should work fine.

2 lane systems mimic roads in that they have one dedicated lane for each direction. If you use right hand lane traffic always put the signal on the outside and you'll have a 2 lane system. At any crossover put a signal on your mouse pointer and make sure no block extends from one side to the other.

okay but does that not mean that the trains would always go on the outer track since its the shortest way?

Trains have gotten smarter over the years. in 0.16 trains DO NOT want to take a path that goes through a train stop. They also don't want to take a path that has any yellow lights on it. I had a slightly longer path that trains prefered, I think because it had fewer junctions attached. So I'm thinking if you had a 4 lane track, 2 each way, then trains should stay on the inside IF there are fewer junctions they have to cross. Eventually they will have to come to a junction to get out of the fast lane and into their exit.

The thing with the lights might be a way to push trains on a certain track. You can put a constant combinator on a light and make it yellow all the time, exept when a train is after it then it would be red. But that should make trains stay to the inside until time to get off.

Trains will chose a free path over a blocked one, so even if they all chose the same initially, once that is full they'll chose the other, which means there is no problem. Have lane switching before obvious choke points like intersections. The best thing to do (and this applies generally, not just for train networks) is to keep things simple. The game will usually figure things out automatically and if there is a problem that's when you spend some of the time you saved not overcomplicating things initially.

If you wanna cheat a bit i have a nice blueprint book and guide on my workshop. But if you just looking for some pointers in the right direction.

The 4 is same as 2 except at interchanges, however if you block correctly with chain rail signals, you can have some succes.

My system reserves lanes for the intended direction after interchange, however without that if you have a couple of lane changers, it wont matter which lane theu decide to use, since they will take a path with low traffic and short route, so they can actually pass a slower train

so am i to understand that if there are 2 lanes in the same direction but 1 has an ocupied block somewere in the middle it wil avoid that even if there is no direct red signal at the interchange?

That has been my observation ENIGMA.

dont you love it when you think you have a big problem but it turns out the factorio devs already fixed it

Yea, there is a lot of that in there ;)
There are so many things that a newbie can do the "hard way" that can be easily done if they just were to ask.

Here are two tips that can save a newbie a LOT of time.
1. Train stops can have the same name. This makes trains decide which to go to depending on situation.
2. Spliters have filter settings (v0.16 something).

Don't even want to know how long I've played without knowing those things. Yea, I used to do things the hard way too. I used to think that I knew all there is to know about this game. Then I discovered Factorio Prints[factorioprints.com].

It's amazing at just how much you DON'T know.

haha thx for the help but i think after 700 hours calling me a newbie isnt realy fair i did know about the 2 tips i just put off using trains for way to long

thx for the help though and for factorio prints that is very helpfull
just as a tip back idk maybe you already know this https://dddgamer.github.io/factorio-cheat-sheet/#science this is a verry usefull site for making your own BP it will tell you all the ratios
Killcreek2 Mar 26, 2018 @ 12:40pm
Careful using that cheat sheet ~ there are a few small errors that could trip you up if you don't verify with your own calcs. (Notably the rocket assembly has wrong ratios ~ already notified the author, but not fixed yet.)

They will "attempt" to do so. , however timing can make them have to wait, or if its the only path. Trains will also attempt to avoid trainstops not in thier schedule.
