Cannot connect to friend's server and vice versa
When she tries to connect to mine, it says could not establish communication with server (or something like that). It managed to connect once, but she could barely move and it was super laggy and she got kicked by the server. When I try to connect to hers, at first I got the error message as above, but now it doesn't even react at all and stays on the menu (not frozen, I can still click around)
ETA: We just tried scaling back the version to 15.37, she connected to my server but lagged horribly, and I could not connect to her server at all, no pop-up, no error message, no nothing
ETA2: Port forwarding isn't working either (unless we're both doing it wrong somehow), and connecting via IP gives the same problems.

I cannot connect to public servers either, while my friend can connect to public servers with less lag

It might be a networking issue and it sounds like a bad connection. You should download microsofts speedtest app if you have windows 10 and test your internet speed.

https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9WZDNCRFHX52

Or go to http://www.speedtest.net/

Im having lag problems already on speeds like 12Mbit/s down and 2-4Mbit/s up

That too... But if they have connected before and can connect at all means that isnt the problem. In the post they says they can connect but have bad connection. If the problem was port related they shouldnt be able to connect at all... It is possible their internet connection is the problem.

Nope it's probably still the port thingy. There was a friday fact where they explained how the multiplayer works.
If the ports are closed, the game tries to punch through the hosts NAT. The game then tries to bundle everything it can and push it through the little hole in the firewall that it created which can and will result in lag WHEN it works.

Tried again today, got this message: Failed to determine external IP address. Other players might not be able to connect.
I think it's the port thing and not a connection problem as the connection is perfect otherwise. I'm trying to do the port thing now, will update here when it's done.

We both tried setting up port forwarding, the problem still persists... Maybe we are doing something wrong?

Where did you set up port forwarding? On which device?

Um on my router, through the web interface, for my laptop

Depending on your location and ISP port forwarding alone will not solve the problem. Since we've run out of ipv4 addresses ISP's use an internal NAT to bundle multiple households under 1 ip.

Here in Luxembourg you can pay 1€ to receive one ip for yourself, thus disabling the ISP's NAT and being able to host games.

Just call your provider and ask if you have a dynamic public ip or a private one
