Well, the release has been pushed back a few more years and a few more versions, but AFAIK there are no further developments on space-platforming.

:D
Well, it's the risk inherent in Early Access, and early promises in general. Some stuff just doesn't make it. Devs have to consider development time, viability, how it fits into the rest of the game, etc. I'm also disappointed that platforms are unlikely to be included, but I don't begrudge the devs for it.
BTW, the devs' stance still seems to be "this would be a great addition for endgame!", as you can see here: https://www.factorio.com/content . In development, you often have to make tough choices about removing or scaling down features, or no software would ever ship. We'd still be waiting for Windows 1.0 and Civilization I. That's why I'm a bad programmer -- I want to include everything! :P
Refer to the roadmap linked on that page, as the page itself is out of date. The space platform is almost certainly not going to be in 1.0. However, mods can actually re-create it, since world layers are a thing.
So, I wasn't implying that space platform is likely to be included before 1.0. I was providing evidence to directly refute the quoted post by Crestfallen Knight. Devs still seem to hold the "great addition for endgame" stance, even though some of those had to be put on a backburner.
Also, my understanding is that they basically see the game as feature complete. There's a few cool things they could add here and there, but the space platform is definitely not something planned to be added into vanilla.
Here's an example of what's possible via mods: https://mods.factorio.com/mod/Caves
The functionality is already there for a space platform, it's just a question of what it can offer for vanilla purposes in order to provide interesting gameplay choices without feeling tacked on.
