"failed to determine external ip address"
When i host a game form my save file a message pops up saying "failed to determine external ip address" and that other people may have troube connecting to me. I wanted to play with my friend but whatever i do it doesnt work. I also tried setting up a server and port forwarding, but nothing works. My friends can connect to eachother without any problems. How do i fix this?

the only fix I have found for this is port forwarding.

I have port forwarded. Do my friends also have to port forward?

Only the server needs port forward.
Do you have a public IP-address?

Yes, I do have a public IP address.

The external ip check can sometimes fail but you should still be able to play. If you have a public ip address and have portforwarded correctly you can just check your ip on speedtest.net and your friend should be able to join using the "connect to server" button and typing in your ip(it says "ip and port" but if the host uses the default port you don't have type the port in there just the ip) there. If even that does not work then you need to check your firewall and double check portforwarding and if your isp really is giving you a public ip.

Try posting your Factorio log file? I'd guess it might be ping-pong servers again, due to your isp using a symmetric NAT.

also got the bug from yesterday after hours of multiplayer without issues

after scanning posts here and on the forum i came to the conclusion that litrealy there is nothing you can do about it
it seems like bug inside the design of factorio that make it clash with some ISPs and i hope the develpoers will one day fix it

you can try hamachi, it will work with it

Its a thing thats not related to Factorio, if both you and your friend have port forwarded apropriately. Then it falls to one of two things. ISP Blocking, or Hardware failing (Some routers/modems don't actually update port forwarding rules until they are completely power cycled, yes i know old thats crap but some of them actually require a full power cycle).

A good way to test if your network is just meh or its crapping out is this.

Use http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

Open any port above port 5000. Just run a program that is open. Like HFS Server, make sure its using as default port 5000. (Assuming your using a windows OS), this program will automatically configure itself to work through routers and help you identify network issues. This is a literal mini server.

When the HFS is set to port 5000 or greater (make sure its a unused port Thats why i say 5000 or greater)

And the server passes external and internal tests then use the site i mentioned that tests if the port is open. Assuming something is actively using port 5000 as explained in this example, then that means that you successfully configured port forwarding for a program.

If it fails despite all the correct configurations for port forwarding and application listening on the port you specified (in this case 5000 as example) then its your ISP or hardware needs power cycled to apply the port configuration.

I'd call and check with your ISP to make sure they are not blocking. Some isp's will say they aren't even if they are, examples like Verizon, Comcast, ATT, etc... (There are ways around it but you need to get farrrrrrrr more technical), Hamachi works as well as it creates a network within a network to forward data "like a virtual private network thats accessable to anyone connecting to that hamachi server. I dont like it though given data can still be intercepted, and its like allowing someone direct access to your network meaning all kinds of hacking attemtps can be made even if unintentional by the end user who may have just no security on their end.

are you serious with that stupid soltuion? it can cause a lot of issues if the network is being used by other people so DONT open all the ports

as said, bad design choice on behalf of the developers
no game should be on the mercy of the ISP regulations and conventions
(should i also mention its only factorio having troubles with hosting servers?)

Whos that directed at?

Regarding the mercy of ISP regulations... then start up your own ISP company then as the alternative?

Regarding the OP if its really that hard for you, im willing to lend you 5min of my time to remotely set it up for you. Although its pretty straight forward regarding port forwarding.

Might wanna also list your ISP and the terms you signed with would dramatically help with determining if it really is the ISP to blame or misconfiguration on yours or your friends end.
