Do you have a public IP-address?
after scanning posts here and on the forum i came to the conclusion that litrealy there is nothing you can do about it
it seems like bug inside the design of factorio that make it clash with some ISPs and i hope the develpoers will one day fix it
you can try hamachi, it will work with it
A good way to test if your network is just meh or its crapping out is this.
Use http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/
Open any port above port 5000. Just run a program that is open. Like HFS Server, make sure its using as default port 5000. (Assuming your using a windows OS), this program will automatically configure itself to work through routers and help you identify network issues. This is a literal mini server.
When the HFS is set to port 5000 or greater (make sure its a unused port Thats why i say 5000 or greater)
And the server passes external and internal tests then use the site i mentioned that tests if the port is open. Assuming something is actively using port 5000 as explained in this example, then that means that you successfully configured port forwarding for a program.
If it fails despite all the correct configurations for port forwarding and application listening on the port you specified (in this case 5000 as example) then its your ISP or hardware needs power cycled to apply the port configuration.
I'd call and check with your ISP to make sure they are not blocking. Some isp's will say they aren't even if they are, examples like Verizon, Comcast, ATT, etc... (There are ways around it but you need to get farrrrrrrr more technical), Hamachi works as well as it creates a network within a network to forward data "like a virtual private network thats accessable to anyone connecting to that hamachi server. I dont like it though given data can still be intercepted, and its like allowing someone direct access to your network meaning all kinds of hacking attemtps can be made even if unintentional by the end user who may have just no security on their end.
as said, bad design choice on behalf of the developers
no game should be on the mercy of the ISP regulations and conventions
(should i also mention its only factorio having troubles with hosting servers?)
Regarding the mercy of ISP regulations... then start up your own ISP company then as the alternative?
Regarding the OP if its really that hard for you, im willing to lend you 5min of my time to remotely set it up for you. Although its pretty straight forward regarding port forwarding.
Might wanna also list your ISP and the terms you signed with would dramatically help with determining if it really is the ISP to blame or misconfiguration on yours or your friends end.
