that is good to hear but is it also safe as in my info will be safe?
Well im just trying to make sure im covered so.... its good to know if il be safe when/if i decide to join a random server .......so is it?
hm, well its not the certainty i was looking for but thank you for your input as this is helpful.....i assume there is no safety like encryption of data to protect the user but who knows
to be fair, i guess really anything is possible, if someone actually tries they could probably create a malicious mod for factorio, but that brings me back to the developer versus users scenario, hopefully the developers have planned carefully what exactly the limitations of a mod within their API are.
but isnt joining a server in general risky as they can also Ip grab if no safe guards like the ones hopefully put in place for mods are absent?
[edit] just noticed you capitalize the i in ip for some reason, at any rate, yes your remote IP will be exposed to any server you join, that's how the internet works, it's very dumbed down and very over simplified but calling ip a computer's phone number for data isn't actually the most incorrect thing.
the real issue though is if someone running that same server has some malicious intent and starts port scanning or actively seeking a way into your system, at which point your firewall and/or router should help depending on configuration.
for what it's worth, ip numbers... they're a weird case, basically if you have a server of any kind running then beyond all shadow of a doubt never expose the public ip to anyone, ever, it's too ripe of a target, but for 99% of all people just hanging out playing games with nothing worth stealing really anyway it's a non-concern and it's almost assured your ip is probably dynamic anyway so they'd have to find you again eventually regardless.
i wouldn't just go posting it publicly without a reason, but realistically it's a minor concern and fine to give to people you are friends with.[/edit]
right so should be safe joining people....thanks for your help
but yeah, it should.
