Splitter filters not working as imagined?
So when I heard about splitter filters I imagines being able to split off one resource from a belt to a new one without affecting the through put of the original belt but this seems to not be the case.

I'm trying to split off Iron Plates from a belt with plates and copper cables while keeping the Iron Plates flowing through on both belts but that does not happen. It either stick to one side or another. So is the splitter filter only used to complete splice a belt in two?

(I know about the undeground belt trick to splice off resources but I figured I'd give the filter a spin.)

Yes. You might want to use more splitters.

use filter inserters

Too slow. Underground Belt "filter" is faster.

It requires 2 splitters. First you just split equally, then the second one filters for just iron plates. Is that not acceptable?

Just seems a bit redundant. That's all.

The problem with filter inserters is that they let things slip through, so they are not a reliable filter. Splitters are reliable. It's their strength.

yeah i use them for my combo ore patches but it can be tricky, coal and iron for example, i got a coal patch with a lil bit of iron in it. there are a few ways to deal with this using filter splitters each of em with their own stregnths and drawbacks.

first and foremost, ANY miner thats doing multiple ores, should have a splitter near it filtering one thing to one side, or atleast making your belt system double rowed. this helps but doesnt completely prevent jam ups.

from here you can do a couple things,

stack 2 filters at the end of where your miners are mining ores, have 1 ore split one way and the other split off to the opposite side, set these splits to also double belt the same material.

or set these 2 filter splitters to simply organize the ores to either side of the belt. this is great early on as your inserters will grab both coal and smeltable ore, but the eventual jam up will stop your production. later on this gets easier to manage.
