If the darkness bothers you, try placing lamps all over the place. When you get access to the Nightvision goggles, be sure to place them in power armor.
These are the reasons I think there should always be an in-game brightness or gamma control.
I understand that developers want to enforce a particular mood or challenge, but they need to understand that their game looks different to their players depending on their hardware configuration.
I should point out that most games work fine, since their default brightness is very low, but there are in-game adjustments that can make them playable. The settings I pick would probably make them look overly bright and washed out on most people's screens, but they work fine for me. That's why, I presume, those settings exist.
Strangely enough, windows looks fine. My desktop background, youtube, movies, and so on are just fine.
The only workaround I've found is to mess with the nvidia control panel. I can find settings that make factorio more visible, but these settings apply to the entire screen. I usually run factorio in windowed mode, and by the time I can make out any night time details, the rest of my screen (where I'm usually watching movies) has gotten way too bright and washed out.
Would anyone support the idea of allowing the light s at least to come on at half brightness during twilight or something? Would the devs care to do something to help those of us for whom this is a problem?
BTW, I'd be happy to pay for improved lighting. If it requires manufacturing a different lamp and uses more electricity that's fine, nothing in life is free.
there is a bug report about it and it's been 'assigned'.

i have a feeling it will get improved.
Ah, thank you, I have only just started Fac and only seen 0.16.
Mind you, as I just edited in my post, I don't mind having to pay for better lights!
Also, I had a thought: I don't know how to do signal circuits yet, but can you presently use that to force lamps to be on permanently, day & night?
Yes, you certainly can! :-)
Side question do mods only disable achivements when inable after the world is created?
Also OP are steam achievements worth that much you feel like sacrificing a portion of the games playability to get them?
