Cars are faster but biters tend to not like it when you drive past them.
Try clearing out easy biter bases and go as far as you can and plop down a radar and maybe a few turrets.
If you have solar panels, you can put the radar on it's own power network.
Accumulators will let your radar work at night too.
Late game exploration can be done entirely by artillery or you can slap a ton of exoskeletons on your armor and just walk really fast.
Exoskeletons let you move faster than the car if you put enough on.
Just make sure your defenses can handle prolonged biter encounters.
It's my first world, everything on default settings, which I've had a friend tell me looks very bug heavy.
The cost is much less than running power poles long-distance, so if a few radars get eaten by biters it is no big loss.
I usually place them down near natural chokepoints &/or in areas I have cleared out, to keep a watch for new nest expansions. The solar radars nearest to my Factory tend to get linked up to the main grid at some point for 24h coverage, but I leave the solar panel as an emergency backup power supply for the radar (by keeping it on an isolated power grid via the unconnected small pole).
