Long distance exploration tips
What are peoples best methods of exploring really far lands? I want to go much further than radars can see, should I be running lines of pylons out into the wilderness and putting a couple turrets and a radar near 1 in 10 of them or is exploring in a car better? I find the density of bug bases is a bit too high to easily speed past, i just get shot by worms before I can go any significant distance.

Early on, walking is best.
Cars are faster but biters tend to not like it when you drive past them.

Try clearing out easy biter bases and go as far as you can and plop down a radar and maybe a few turrets.
If you have solar panels, you can put the radar on it's own power network.
Accumulators will let your radar work at night too.

Late game exploration can be done entirely by artillery or you can slap a ton of exoskeletons on your armor and just walk really fast.
Exoskeletons let you move faster than the car if you put enough on.

If you use mods, farl will let you quickly place rail blueprints, including power poles turrets and radar. You can cover alot of distance quickly

If there are too many enemy bases to drive (some kind of deathworld I presume?) then artillery is definitely your best bet.

Artillery even clears out bases for you so automated biter clearing.
Just make sure your defenses can handle prolonged biter encounters.

It's my first world, everything on default settings, which I've had a friend tell me looks very bug heavy.

Solar-powered daytime radars are great to place-and-forget (1x solar panel, 1x radar, 1x wood power pole). They can explore into / past dense biter nests, so you don't have to risk getting too close, & also across narrow oceans / lakes.
The cost is much less than running power poles long-distance, so if a few radars get eaten by biters it is no big loss.

I usually place them down near natural chokepoints &/or in areas I have cleared out, to keep a watch for new nest expansions. The solar radars nearest to my Factory tend to get linked up to the main grid at some point for 24h coverage, but I leave the solar panel as an emergency backup power supply for the radar (by keeping it on an isolated power grid via the unconnected small pole).

When I had to find oil I just ran in a spiral pattern outwards from my base, while avoiding biters. Now I have a car which speeds up the travel. Not sure what's the objective of your exploration but I don't think radars are much use if you are looking for resources.

I recommend the mod Aircraft for exploring.
