Inserting moduls via bots
Is there a way to insert moduls in an already existing machine? I know that I can replace them with the upgrade-tool but until now I didn't find a way to just insert them.

I don't really use blueprints all that much so I might be mistaken but don't they place the modules as well if the blueprint includes them?
You should be able to paste a blueprint over existing machines to change recipes and add modules.
(do correct me if I am wrong of course)

Unfortunatly it doesn't work that way. If I do that only the recipe of the machine will change but not the amount of modules.

It does work when placing the machines with blueprint instead of updating them, but I guess if you need to deconstruct and rebuild (even with robots) it isn't exactly a massive improvement over going there and putting the modules with shift click unless you are far away and use the radar map for that.
Sorry for not having a better answer, I tried a few ideas in sandbox but none of them worked.

It would be a good idea if you could paste an "updated" BP over an existing one, to swap modules, for example. Not sure why the game doesn't register this. If you paste a BP with different modules, bots should fly over and replace those modules.

Currently deconstruct then blueprint is the only way.

Yup, vanilla is lacking this function.
I would love if they would be applied with a shift-clicked BP placed over the top (as Nailfoot suggested).

There are some mods that can help though (assuming you use mods):

I just install the modules in one machine and use the copy paste modules mod mentioned above.
The following mod appears to allow modules to be added with an upgrade planner.
https://mods.factorio.com/mod/upgrade-planner-next
I am not sure if the upgrade planner built into version .17 can do this.

1.0 and still not possible. It would seem logic and consistent on how the upgrade planner works, since "upgrading" in Factorio simply means swapping an entity.

it is possible, but you need to configure the upgrade planner beforehand.
If you place it in your inventory and right click, you can specify filters for which entity you want replaced by which other entity. This can also be done with modules.

This also allows downgrading btw.

Sorry if this comes a bit to late for you, since this was my first google result for this problem I wanted to share the solution.

It is never too late. So thank you. :)

I now use this great mod:
https://mods.factorio.com/mod/ModuleInserter

However, I will follow your solution the next time I play vanilla.
